Hide-Programme Description
This single-stage, add-on programme offers a valuable BSc qualification in Mathematics and also provides the necessary mathematical foundations for entry to the BSc Honours Degree in Mathematics. A degree in mathematics is highly sought after by many employers and produces extremely flexible graduates. This programme provides a core of modern mathematics that is ideal for second-level teachers, professionals in industry, commerce and public services.
The programme comprises four modules and takes two years to complete. Each year, two modules are studied, both delivered in the evening, making the programme attractive to those in full-time employment. The programme is suitable for those who have already studied a significant amount of mathematics, within various disciplines, at third level. Graduates of the programme are eligible to enter the part-time or full-time honours degree programmes in the School of Mathematical Sciences.
(In addition, the School of Mathematical Sciences offers the opportunity to study any of the modules from this programme – and other programmes in the School – as individual Continuing Professional Development certificates. For more information please contact maev.maguire@dit.ie).
Learning Outcomes
On successfully completing the BSc (Ordinary), the learner will:
• have a good understanding of advanced concepts of Mathematical Methods, Algebra, Statistics and Numerical Methods,
• be able to apply mathematical theory and techniques to solve a wide range of problems,
• be able to employ several software packages to model and solve problems in the different areas covered.
|
Subjects Taught |
Year 1:
•Mathematical Methods 1
•Vector Calculus
•Numerical Methods 2
Year 2:
•Statistics 2
•Algebra 2
Students may enter Year 1 or Year 2 which are offered on alternate years, depending upon which is being offered in the current academic year. |
Assessment Method |
Continuous assessment counts for 30% of the final mark. Examinations are held at the end of Semester 2. |

Hide-Career Opportunities
Career opportunities for graduates of a degree in mathematics are found in all sectors of employment. It is an extremely flexible qualification and the mathematical, analytical and problem-solving skills that are learned are vital for modern roles in commerce, industry, business, the public sector and other professions. At present, there are a wide range of opportunities for graduates in the ICT and financial sectors but the flexible nature of a mathematics qualification allows graduates to change careers and embark upon new careers in emerging and rapidly growing sectors. Mathematical skills are also important for upskilling and can enhance career progression in roles that rely on analytical approaches. Graduates of the programme will also be able to undertake further study in the School of Mathematical Sciences which offers a ladder of qualifications including honours degrees, masters degrees and degrees by research.
Progression
Students who have successfully completed the programme are eligible to enter the part-time honours degree programme in Mathematics (DT8248) or stage 4 of the full-time honours degree programmes, Mathematical Sciences or Industrial Mathematics.
