Emergency department nursing is a specialty where nurses need to be competent in caring for patients that present suddenly and acutely unwell. There is a need to develop additional clinical expertise among emergency nurses. This 6 month course aims to provide essential education and clinical skills required by nurses in line with best evidence based practice.
Courses will be offered once a year – commencing in January depending on demand. The course will be delivered over 26 weeks using a blended learning approach. This includes lectures, on-line learning and skills practice.
The theoretical aspect of this course is assessed through written assignments. The clinical component is assessed in practice via a Competency Development Workbook.
The Indicative course content includes: Triage in the Emergency Department; Non-life/limb threatening Injuries; Emergency Medicine Early Warning System (EMEWS); Tissue viability; Cardiovascular Assessment; Mental Health; Sepsis; Quality Improvement; The older person presenting with delirium and dementia; Stress management; and future development needs.
Professional Recognition
The Certificate in Emergency Nursing is a Level 8 Special Purpose Award. It is worth 20 ECTS.
