This healthcare traineeship has worked with many residential care facilities in the Cavan and surrounding areas to allow our trainees to secure their 12-week work experience.
Healthcare has seen exceptional challenges over the last 12 months with COVID-19. Healthcare workers within all healthcare settings have been known for their resilience in working in a challenging workplace environment. This has never been more evident than this year. Health care workers have been on the frontline, working above and beyond to be there for their employers/colleagues but most importantly, for their patients/residents/clients.
This 38 week full time traineeship is a QQI level 5 in Health Service Skills. Learners will acquire knowledge and develop skills with an overall competence and confidence to work in the provision of holistic care in a variety of healthcare settings. After completion of this traineeship, you can work as a Healthcare Assistant, Healthcare Attendant, Carer - these titles are used interchangeably depending on your workplace.
It is hard work but it it is one of the most rewarding jobs you will do. This employment/placement is predominately shift work.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
In addition to the award/qualification learners will receive certification in Cardiac First Response (CFR), Patient Moving and Handling, Safeguarding, Management of Actual or Potential Aggression (MAPA).
The objectives of this programme are as follows:
• To enable the learner to explore healthcare support with a view to re-skilling or up-skilling and exploring concepts and subject areas that may interest the learner in future programmes or employment
• To support the learner to acquire the theoretical, practical and interpersonal knowledge, skill and competence to provide quality care and assistance to service users based on age, ability and health of the individual
• To enable the learner to communicate effectively with and contribute to the social and emotional needs of service users.

Further Study
At Cavan Institute:
Graduates of this course in Healthcare Traineeship may progress to the first year of a BA in Applied Social Studies in Social Care, which is a level 7 Athlone Institute of Technology degree programme where students take year one in Cavan Institute and remaining years in AIT. Graduates may also apply for a place on the one-year level 6 course, Health Services Supervisory Management also available at Cavan Institute.
Elsewhere:
Graduates are eligible to apply through the CAO and/or the Higher Education Links Scheme for entry to year one of a range of higher certificate and degree programmes at Institutes of Technology and Universities (please check with the institution regarding local eligibility requirements).
