Hide-POL10120 Foundations in Global Development
Academic Year 2022/2023
This module is designed to introduce students to key themes in the foundations of global politics and development. The first section of the module explores theories (and histories) of development (and underdevelopment), including market-based approaches (free markets, free trade, etc.); approaches that emphasize the role of the state; Marxist and dependency schools; as well as feminist, environmental and post-development theories. The second section of the module explores more empirical aspects of development (and underdevelopment), such as foreign direct investment, role of institutions and corruption.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the module, students should be able to understand and critically engage with debates about global affairs and their implications for the development (or lack of it) of different parts of the world.
