This module is the second stage of a beginners' course in ancient Greek. The textbook is Reading Greek (Cambridge University Press). Students read adapted Greek; learn vocabulary, grammar, and syntax; and do language exercises. The module will cover sections 7-16 of the textbook (omitting section 15). Students will move beyond the textbook, and learn skills of translating unadapted Greek. They should now be able to read Greek prose and verse texts. The module also provides an introduction to ancient Greek culture, especially 5th- and 4th-century Athens.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this module students should be able to:
* manage a working Greek vocabulary, all basic grammar, and the main syntactical constructions;
* translate passages of adapted Greek, both prepared and unprepared;
* solve advanced grammatical transformation exercises;
* translate prepared and unprepared passages of unadapted Greek.
Indicative Module Content:
The module consists of an advanced introduction to the ancient Greek language, covering approximately chapters 7-14 of Reading Greek.
