Applicants must have at least Level 5 in Horticulture or 3 years experience in the relevant area of horticulture and provide a letter of recommendation from a current employer. |

*Please note the level 6 component courses are open to students who have successfully achieved a Certificate in Horticulture QQI Level 5 or persons currently working within the horticulture industry with a minimum of three years’ experience (in this case a letter from employer must be provided and a short interview will take place). |

This course is designed for those currently employed in any area of horticulture who would like to deepen their scientific and applied knowledge in the area of ecology & environment. The student will learn how to assist in the management of the natural environment.

• Review policy framework for environmental and biodiversity protection in Ireland
• Appraise the role of statutory and voluntary organisations in environmental protection
• Apply techniques to promote biodiversity in the horticulture industry
• Evaluate factors influencing population dynamics and community composition
• Examine habitat restoration techniques
• Report on a range of environmental features
• Assess habitats for biodiversity and quality using practical techniques
• Identify invasive species of plants and pests
• Devise a management plan to control an invasive species
• Ensure implementation of procedures to create and maintain a safe working environment

Careers or Further Progression |
This award is a component part of the full-time Advanced Certificate in Horticulture programme offered at both colleges. On completion of this course students can undertake further part-time courses in the areas of Landscaping, Nursery Stock Production, Sportsturf and Market Gardening. |
