The module provides a survey of the history of Western art music from around 1750 until the early 21st century. It will feature the development of musical styles, aesthetics, issues of cultural history in general, questions of intentionality and reception, nationalism, exoticism, race and gender.
Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to:
distinguish the musical styles of different periods;
create links between music history and cultural history in general;
practice their skills at researching and writing a scholarly essay;
deepen their engagement with critical thinking.

The history of Western art music from the Classical era (1750) to the present.
Musical styles and genres.
