Students who do not hold an MA or equivalent qualification (only admitted in exceptional cases) may be required to take modules from the SMLLC MA programme. Students may, in consultation with their supervisor and the Head of School, take additional MA modules.
Minimum English language requirements: please visit Maynooth University International Office website for information about English language tests accepted and required scores. The requirements specified are applicable for both EU and non-EU applicants.

Hide-The PhD in Chinese Studies offers research degree opportunities for students with specific interest in the fields of Chinese language, literature and culture. The research profiles of staff members are varied, covering cultural and literary analysis with particular emphasis on: Chinese nationalism and quest for national identity; the conflict and communication between China and the West; China’s sport policy and practice; Chinese martial arts; comparative philosophy; philosophy in literature; Chinese Buddhism.
The student, in consultation with his/her supervisor, will devise a research plan. It is advised that students also avail of the opportunity to take Language Specific modules (CN610, CN 620), Generic / Transferrable Skills modules (GST11, GST13, GST15 or other) and / or Subject-specific / Advanced Specialist modules (any of the CN84X modules, e.g. CN840, CN841 or CN842).
Modules to the value of at least 30ECTS over the duration of the programme can be taken.

Careers or Further Progression |
The PhD in Chinese Studies equips students for a number of career paths. These include: teaching at various levels (including university), advisory functions in economic and cultural exchanges between China and Ireland (or Europe), business, politics, publishing, materials’ development, adult education and support, further study at postdoc level. |
