The Institute welcomes applications from persons who will be 23 years of age and over on the 1st of January of the proposed year of entry and who wish to be admitted as a mature student. The Institute reserves a minimum of 5% of all places for mature applicants. |

In March of each year, MTU welcomes applications for add-on degree and honours degree programmes, with a commencement date of the following September.
The application process is open for one month, from early March to the first week in April each year (this date changes slightly due to the Easter holidays, but it is always within the first week in April). |

The Bachelor Of Science (Honours) In Civil engineering Add-on is all about the assessment, planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of the different types of infrastructural works that society needs, from roads and rail systems to bridges, harbours, airports, energy and utility services, and water supply schemes.
It is a broad discipline which also includes structural & environmental engineering. Structures can include commercial, multi-storey buildings or bridges and structural engineers are concerned with ensuring safety during the design and construction phases. Environmental engineers apply engineering principles to improve the quality of our environment and work towards the creation of healthy water, air and land resources.
Why study Civil Engineering at MTU - Kerry Campus?
The new honours degree course includes both technical and management skills and builds on the existing and very successful level 7 Civil and Environmental Engineering course. In developing the course, we have been very careful to maintain the correct balance between theory & practical skills, to emphasise team working & professionalism and to incorporate industry standard information technology. Graduates should be creative problem solvers who can help to shape the future.
During the first three years of the course there are a broad range of modules in topics such as environmental engineering (water resources, waste management and coastal protection), structural engineering (analysis, design & computer detailing) and infrastructural development (transport and roads). The aim is to provide a good technical knowledge with fundamental engineering principles. Practical skills are developed in land surveying, drawing and the use of software. However civil engineers need more than just technical skills, and the professional, ethical, social, legal and financial aspects of engineering are explored, as well as opportunities to gain research and communication skills.
A twelve-week work placement is a central feature of the programme in Year 3. It’s while on placement that you really see the value of your academic learning in a real-life working, environment. Your placement lays the foundations of your career path and significantly boosts your employability at the end of the course. It’s all about developing skills, gaining knowledge and cultivating the attitude needed to build a thriving career.
Students have the option to graduate after year three with a level 7 qualification.
The emphasis in year 4 is to ensure that graduates are able to work effectively as a professional engineer and are ready to enter the workplace. This is achieved by providing a comprehensive simulated design office experience where students working in teams plan, design & prepare drawings for a real life engineering project from the concept phase to the construction. This takes places during both semesters and involves on-site surveying as well as project management. This is supported by a range of modules including advanced civil engineering design & software, health & safety, energy and communication.
IT Tralee has excellent engineering laboratories for testing structures, soils, fluids and materials. We maintain a comprehensive range of civil, structural and environmental engineering software while the online library gives access to the standards, regulations and legislation needed to facilitate problem solving.

Civil engineering offers challenging and varied employment, with opportunities to travel. The course at IT Tralee provides a broad range of marketable, practical & professional skills such as site surveying, engineering design and detailing (3D CAD), design office and site administration, laboratory testing, project management and health & safety.
Civil engineering graduate engineers are employed, both in Ireland and abroad, by contractors, subcontractors, consultants, state and semi-state bodies, local authorities and suppliers of civil engineering products and equipment.
Progression
- Graduates may opt to continue their education to post-graduate level. Because the programme is validated as an NFQ level 8 qualification, students may apply for a wide variety of MS. and ME taught programmes both in Ireland and the UK. Typically, these are 1 year full time or 2 or 3 years part time.
- There is a clear pathway for graduates who wish to pursue further studies and ultimately gain professional engineering qualifications such as Chartered Engineer.
