Hide-Aims
The aim of this programme is to develop the skill of guiding by promoting best-practice standards of tour guiding to ensure that guides will have a background of national core knowledge combined with in-depth local knowledge of an identified region. In essence, this programme embraces the importance of the wider tourism product while striving to nurture the value of place and space in the context of local heritage tourism. It will equip participants with the professional, technical, social and administrative skills to offer a quality guiding service with particular emphasis on engaging with local heritage, culture and social history of identified regions.
Content
This programme comprises two 5-credit modules, namely Professional Tour Guiding and Local Irish Culture and Heritage Guiding. The Professional Tour Guiding module intends to equip participants with the knowledge of the structures and profile of the broader Irish tourism and hospitality industry, and the skills to provide an accurate, informative and interesting regional or local tour experience. This module will build skills in outdoor leadership, advance guiding and group management and will implement best safety and environmental practice in the tour experience. The Local Irish Heritage and Culture Guiding module proposes to equip learners with the knowledge, skill and competences to assess heritage and cultural products from a tourism development perspective, and to facilitate an understanding and appreciation of Ireland’s cultural and natural heritage with particular emphasis on an identified region or place.
