Hide-IRISH LEAVING CERTIFICATE SCHOOL LEAVERS
If you present the Irish Leaving Certificate you need to present six recognised subjects, selected according to course requirements, you must obtain a minimum grade H5 in two subjects and minimum grade O6/ H7 in the remaining four subjects, in order to meet matriculation requirements. For all courses in UCC this must include Irish (unless exempt) and English. To compete for a place on a programme, you must meet the minimum entry requirements as well as any specific/additional requirements, and then compete based on results obtained, e.g. points. You can combine results achieved in different sittings for the purpose of meeting the minimum entry requirements for programmes (except for Medicine, CK701). However, results achieved in separate years may not be combined for the purpose of scoring points. You will compete based on a points scheme.

Hide-MATURE STUDENT APPLICANTS
To be eligible to compete for a place as a mature student, you must be 23 years of age on or before 1 January 2022 and apply via www.cao.ie by 1 February. Please check out the CAO website for more information on the application process as a mature student. There is a helpful video for mature applicants.
There are places for mature students on all undergraduate programmes. As a mature student you do not need Leaving Certificate points to enter UCC. However, some degree programmes have specific educational requirements so it is essential that you check the CAO Mature Student Guide, the Mature Student Office website www.ucc.ie/en/mature or contact our Mature Student Advisor for further details mso@ucc.ie. The Mature Student Office will be happy to help you with your application.
If you are a mature applicant, please note that you can also apply to UCC based on Leaving Certificate (LC) or QQI FE results. You may apply under all three pathways, if applicable (LC, QQI FE, Mature). Just ensure to tick boxes 1, 2 & 8, on the Qualifications and Assessment Summary section on the CAO application form, to be assessed under all three pathways.
Some programmes will require a statement of interest, an entrance exam, an interview, and/or the MSAP. The MSAP is an assessment which is designed to allow you to demonstrate your skills in written English and your capacity for critical reasoning. It is a requirement for mature entry to all programmes in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies & Social Sciences.
For more information on the specific requirements per programme, please see: www.ucc.ie/en/study/ undergrad/entryreqs/matureapplicants/ and to contact a Mature Student Advisor, visit www.ucc.ie/en/mature.

Hide-WHAT IS AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE?
Agricultural Science at UCC has a unique dairy focus. It is especially tailored to attract those with a particular passion for dairying, who are ambitious and committed to advancing a career in the dairy or wider agri-food industry. The Irish dairy industry is experiencing an exciting period of growth which presents challenges for the industry but also many opportunities for enthusiastic and highly skilled graduates. Grounded in the very latest science-based research, this unique and exciting degree will equip future leaders with the scientific, technical, financial and environmental sustainability principles necessary to drive future competitiveness and sustainability within Ireland’s pasture-based dairy industry. There is a real emphasis on the application of the latest knowledge, techniques and technologies with hands-on training.
WHY UCC?
UCC has a long standing reputation of excellence in Dairy and Food Science. Through collaboration with Teagasc and well-established links with the agri-food industry, we deliver an Agricultural Science degree that is somewhat unique. Teagasc Moorepark is a nationally and internationally recognised centre of excellence in pasture-based dairy research and innovation. Clonakilty Agricultural College has been a renowned flagship of practical agricultural training for over 100 years. This degree is a research-led degree, constantly incorporating the latest advances in agricultural science. You will receive a comprehensive agricultural education; building from a foundation of fundamental science, developing core knowledge, applying the very latest tools and technologies, and interrogating the business that is dairying. This Agricultural Science degree, steeped in the legacy that is Teagasc’s low-cost pasture-based system’s ideology, will provide you with the necessary skills and understanding to succeed.
WHAT WILL HELP YOU?
Agricultural Science, Biology and Chemistry are helpful subjects for this course. COURSE STRUCTURE Agricultural Science at UCC promises the perfect balance between science and application. Anchored in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) at UCC, it is here on UCC campus where you will spend the majority of both first and second year. Teagasc’s input at this point will be delivered through a combination of visits (transport provided from UCC) to Teagasc Moorepark in Fermoy, Teagasc Clonakilty Agricultural College, and a series of complimentary field trips. From third year, you will spend an increasing amount of time at the Paddy O’Keeffe Innovation Centre at Teagasc Moorepark. You will become immersed in and enjoy the unique ‘Moorepark experience’. You will see at first hand the many flagship research experiments underpinning Teagasc’s latest advice. Two structured work placement opportunities form a significant component of this degree: 1) alongside one of Ireland’s leading dairy farmers (award winning in many cases) and 2) amidst one of Ireland’s key agri-industries. These placements will deepen your knowledge and forming a key part of your professional development. Practicals, field trips, commercial farm visits, evening seminars and guest lectures will further enhance your learning and overall experience.
WORK PLACEMENT
Placements are organised by Teagasc. First a 16- week dairy farm placement with one of Ireland’s top dairy farmers where you will experience all aspects of the day to day management of an intensive, highly efficient, profitable and sustainable dairy farming operation. You will access information sources relevant to the critical appraisal and strategic management of a successful modern dairy farm business. Later in the summer, the opportunity to spend 12 weeks amidst one of Ireland’s key industry stakeholders tailored to your individual interest will also be arranged. Third year work placements also form the basis of a substantial ‘final year’ project challenging and consolidating your learning from the entire course and representing assessment based on ‘real world’ application.
