Hide-What is this course about?
This interdisciplinary module explores current contrasting and emerging issues in childhood and youth theory, policy and practice. The roles, responsibilities and experiences that children and young people may explore outside of the family are examined. The lives of children and young people who experience adversity and resilience are studied. The future of childhood as a consequence of globalisation is critiqued. Finally, the active agency of children and young people as participants in their own lives and futures is discussed. The theme of empowering and enabling children and young people to become active citizens runs through the module.
On completion of this course, students should be able to:
• Evaluate different theoretical approaches to childhood and youth;
• Analyse concepts relating to the child as part of family and community;
• Appraise the changing and challenging lives of children and young people;
• Discuss the complex nature of child protection in relation to challenging lives that some children lead.
