Please note the level 6 component courses are open to students who have successfully achieved a Certificate in Horticulture QQI Level 5 or persons currently working within the horticulture industry with a minimum of three years’ experience (in this case a letter from employer must be provided and a short interview will take place). |

Tree and Shrub Management (Level 6 Component Award – QQI 6N3624)
This course is designed for those employed in a sector where selection, establishment and care of trees and shrubs is part of their role. It is suitable for those working in parks or garden management, nurseries, garden centres, or sportsturf facilities. Students learn about planning and maintenance of trees and shrubs. |

• Explain current legislation and codes of practice relating to trees and shrubs
• Select appropriate species for a range of situations
• Appraise tree and shrub stock for hazards and suggest appropriate actions
• Explain the response of trees to wounding and its implications for management
• Apply the necessary skills in relation to planting and aftercare of trees and shrubs
• Assess protection requirements for retained trees on development sites
• Identify a broad range of trees and shrubs
• Ensure implementation of procedures to create and maintain a safe working environment

Progression
This award is a component part of the full-time Advanced Certificate in Horticulture programme offered at both colleges. On completion of this course students can undertake further part-time modules that are complimentary to this course. |
