A further opportunity will be provided for eligible candidates who have not up to now opted for Accredited Grades to do so later in the summer.

The information below was provided directly to candidates on 1 June:

The Leaving Certificate 2021 Candidate Self-Service Portal was open to candidates from the 27 April until 1 May to enable them review and confirm their choices of examinations, Accredited Grades or both for the 2021 Leaving Certificate. When the Candidate Self Service Portal closed there was no further opportunity for candidates to update their choices. However, in recent days, the State Examinations Commission and the Department of Education have received a number of requests from schools and students who wish to change their options from examinations only and to now also opt for Accredited Grades.

A further opportunity will be provided for eligible candidates who have not up to now opted for Accredited Grades to do so later in the summer. This does not require candidates to take any action at this time. The State Examinations Commission will contact all eligible candidates during the summer and offer them the option to receive Accredited Grades.

Candidates should note that their performance in the written examinations in June 2021 will not be used in calculating their Accredited Grades, or vice versa.

This provision of a later opportunity to opt for Accredited Grades will not apply to out-of-school learners or to students studying subjects out of school. These candidates had a very specific application process in which they were required to engage and present evidence of their learning for consideration on or before 21 May. All of the application dates for the out-of-school processes have now closed and there is no further opportunity for these students to engage in the Accredited Grades process.

Leaving Certificate and SEC Accredited Grades 2021 (source www.gov.ie)

On 17 February Government announced that the written Leaving Certificate 2021 examinations will be held in June with related components also proceeding as far as possible subject to public health advice. A corresponding process of grades accredited by the State Examinations Commission (SEC) will also be available to students who opt to receive them. The Government also announced that the Junior Cycle examinations will not be run in 2021. Read the announcement.

The key points to note from this announcement for Leaving Certificate students are:

  • Students will have the option of whether to sit the examinations, receive SEC Accredited Grades, or both, on a subject by subject basis. This means that students can sit examinations in any number of subjects they want, while also receiving SEC Accredited Grades in any number of subjects they want.
  • Students who opt for both will have their better grades in each subject reflected in their results.
  • Students will be required to register on the student portal; confirm their subject and level entry details; opt for the examinations and/or to receive SEC Accredited Grades. The SEC's Candidate Portal is expected to open in the week of 8 March 2021 to allow students to make their choices. Further details will be issued in advance.
  • There will be no fees payable for the 2021 examinations and no fees for SEC Accredited Grades.
  • It is intended that the results of both the examinations and the SEC Accredited Grades processes will issue to students within the required timeframe for progression to higher and further education in Ireland.

More detail on the Leaving Certificate examinations and SEC Accredited Grades is provided in the document A Guide to State Examinations and Accredited Grades For Leaving Certificate 2021. You can download the PDF copy of this guide here or read it online here .
