This General Learning Studies course aims to provide the Learner with the oppertunity to develop their academic skills and give them an introduction to writing skills, research studies and a foundation in the academic subjects in preparation for third level.

Entry Requirements
Education: NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme. CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway Additional requirements may apply to non-EU/EEA Applicants and may be subject to full international fees (Please refer to Information for International Learners) *Each provider may have additional requirements, not outlined above.
Aptitude: Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.
Previous Experience: Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course, be able to work with responsibility and demonstrate the ability to work on their own initiative.

Fees: There are no tuition fees payable to the College by EU nationals.
Non-EU Nationals who do not meet the exemption requirements are liable for a full tuition fee of €3,653 as per instruction of the DFHERIS. The LCFE College Registration Fee, materials Fee and Exam Fees are also payable. The tuition fee is non-refundable.
** Some programmes charge additional materials fees where the cost of the materials used for that course are relatively high.
*Some programmes may have additional examination fees if they are being accredited by bodies other than QQI (eg City and Guilds, CIBTAC, IPU etc). The QQI Exam Fee for Level 5 programmes is €50 and €80 for a Level 6.
Exemptions
The QQI Exam fee may be exempted when relevant documentation is presented at registration.
Means-tested Maintenance Grants are available to qualifying learners. These grants are administered by Learner Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) through www.studentfinance.ie. All applications must be made on-line. The College has a Grants Officer, who will advise applicants, as necessary.

The Business Department has adapted its programmes to respond to the challenges faced by the Irish economy over the past number of years. The suite of business programmes provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of fields such as administration, accounting, marketing, management and enterprise.
Progression Opportunities
A large number of Higher Education Institutions including Universities, Technological Universities and private 3rd Level Colleges offer places to QQI CAO applicants.
In addition to the Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS), which links specific QQI Level 5 Certificates and some Level 6 Advanced Certificates to a number of reserved places on Higher Education programmes, the Technological Universities and some other Higher Education Institutions operate admissions criteria and scoring system for non-specific QQI Levels 5 and 6 Certificate applicants.

Learners are eligible for consideration for entry to Higher Education Nursing programmes when they achieve the QQI Level 5 Award:

and obtain a Distinction in 5 modules in the QQI Level 5 programme, which must include a Distinction in 5N0749 (Anatomy and Physiology), 5N4325 (Nursing Theory & Practice), and 5N1279 (Human Growth and Development) or 5N2746 (Biology).
A quota of reserved places are allocated to applicants presenting with QQI qualifications.
Places are allocated on a competitive basis. The best eight modules, generally at a single sitting, are considered for scoring purposes.
