Literacy has been highlighted as a priority in the Literacy and Numeracy for Learning and Life: The National Strategy to Improve Literacy and Numeracy among Children and Young People 2011-2020 (DES, 2011). St Angela’s College has responded to this strategy through the development of a module on Literacy. This module will focus on developing an in-depth understanding of the concept of literacy. It will provide the participant with an overview of literacy, focusing in particular on the areas of reading and writing. It will also enable the participant to develop an understanding and knowledge of assessment procedures with regard to literacy and to critically appraise strategies and approaches to developing literacy. The module is delivered using online components as well as face-to-face workshops.

Participants may progress to Masters level on successful completion of three modules which must include the online blended learning module: Educational Research Methods. The exit award will be a Master of Arts in Professional Studies in Special Educational Needs.

Programme Overview

This module is suited to a wide range of participants from a variety of settings, including:

- Graduates who wish to do a Postgraduate Diploma in Education and are awaiting a place on the programme
- Qualified teachers who are seeking full-time employment
- Employees within the Health Service Executive who work with learners with Special Educational Needs
- Principals, managers and Department Inspectorate
- Employees and Managers within Early Childhood Education sector
- Classroom assistants (including cuntóirí teanga)

Continuous assessment will apply throughout the module. It will combine coursework on relevant aspects of Special Educational Needs with e-tivities, discussion boards, portfolio/project-based learning, literature reviews and case studies, which will be carried out within an appropriate educational context during the academic year. The concept of the ‘reflective practitioner’ will be a basic criterion permeating all forms of assessment.
