Course Overview
All PhD students in the College of Science will enrol in a Structured PhD.
The research activity of the discipline covers a range of topics in both Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. These include solid mechanics and elasticity, numerical methods, quantum computation, conformal field theory, materials modelling, and mathematical biology. Members of the discipline are involved in joint projects with other research units within the University, such as the Stokes Cluster for Applied Mathematics or the Biomechanics Research Centre.
Research Areas:
Elastic waves and stability, nonlinear solid biomechanics;
Quantum Computation and Quantum Information, Computer Algebra, Tropical Geometry;
Mathematics of diffusion, modelling and analysis of impurity diffusion mechanisms in semiconductors;
Multibody system dynamics, numerical bifurcation analysis, piecewise smooth dynamical systems;
Vertex Operator Algebras and Conformal Field Theory, Monstrous Moonshine, Riemann Surfaces;
Biological Membranes, Artificial Muscles, Electro-active Polymers, Morphogenesis & Growth.
