Careers / Further progression
Careers
Irish Industry is recruiting abroad due to the shortage of robotics, automation and digital manufacturing engineers. The programme will position graduates to move into automation engineering positions or advanced manufacturing ones, such as digitalisation of manufacturing, data analytics, operation management, to name but a few, in the Medical Device and engineering manufacturing sectors.
Progression
Graduates from the Level 7 degree can add on one extra year to progress to the Level 8 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Automation and Digital Manufacturing. Students can continue to work and attend two evenings of online classes per week as well as one day per week in our state-of-the-art facilities in our Galway City, Dublin Road campus. Many postgraduate options are available across ATU on both a full-time and part-time basis.

Course Overview
This full-time Bachelor of Engineering in Automation and Robotics programme is a fantastic opportunity for students who want to get hands-on skills in industry while learning.
The programme has been designed in close consultation with manufacturing industries in the western region, which have identified an acute skill gap and need for skilled engineers who can build and manage modern manufacturing practices. Graduates of this programme will have the skills and knowledge to address the evolving Industry 5.0 design and automated manufacturing processes and integrate in-house and vendor automation solutions.
Students can join this programme through the Level 8 AU649 Engineering (Common Entry) or Level 7 AU549 Engineering (Common Entry). Students study full-time on campus for Year 1 and study general engineering modules.
At the end of Year 1, students are recruited by leading robotics and automation-based manufacturing companies across the region. From Year 2, students transfer from the common entry programme onto the Bachelor of Engineering in Automation and Robotics programme. Students are based in industry three days per week (paid) and attend university two days per week.
For Year 2 and Year 3, students get a 24-month (or 2 x 12-month contract if two separate companies are involved) co-op contract starting in September, working 3 x 8-hour days (Monday to Wednesday). They attend 2 days of laboratories/ projects in ATU Galway City, Dublin Road campus on Thursday and Friday, in addition to 2 evenings online (total 6 hrs). Students will take leave to attend industry training (Three weeks in Year 2 and one week in Year 3).
Places are limited to the commitment made by the companies involved, so students can only get a place in the programme once they have secured a contract with the employer.
If a student is not successful in securing a contract, they may continue their studies on one of the many other degree options following the common first year, specialising in Agricultural Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Design or Mechanical Engineering.
