Sustainable Horticulture with Biodiversity
Over the year, by combining classroom and practical elements, students will develop and enhance their knowledge and will acquire the skills required to start a career in the expanding area of Horticulture and the Green Economy or to progress on to further education.

Duration
1 academic year full time – 5 days per week.
Part time option available.
Entry Requirements
• Education: NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme. CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway Additional requirements may apply to non-EU/EEA Applicants and may be subject to full international fees (Please refer to Information for International Learners) *Each provider may have additional requirements, not outlined above.
• Aptitude: Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course
• Previous Experience: Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course, be able to work with responsibility and demonstrate the ability to work on their own initiative.
Careers / Further progression
Education Progression Options
Learners who successfully complete this Level 5 course may have the option to continue their studies. There are varied opportunities available to progress to higher education programmes. Learners who have satisfied the criteria set by the CAO process may progress to third level education, and may secure a place in the National and Technological Universities on various Degree Programmes.

Places are limited - early application is strongly advised.
Mature students are welcome to apply.
There are no tuition fees payable to LOETB Abbeyleix.
However, a QQI Certificate fee of €50 and a fee for any additional training may apply.
Learners must provide their own materials as specified by the tutor.
Learners must purchase safety footwear/clothing for working outdoors in all types of weather.
Learners may be eligible to apply for a Student Maintenance Grant (SUSI) and the Back to Education Allowance.

Programme Aim
The aim of this award is to enable the learner to carry out horticulture operations independently or under direction in a range of fields. The award will also enable learners to prepare for progression to a horticultural specialisation at level 6.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this programme learners will have the skills, knowledge and competencies to undertake horticulture operations independently or under direction in a range of fields. Learners will be able to demonstrate a broad range of knowledge of horticultural and plant care techniques.
