Entry Requirements

A minimum of 5 passes at ordinary level in the Leaving Certificate or its equivalent.

OR

Leaving Certificate Vocational, Leaving Certificate Applied or QQI Level 4 qualifications.

The Leaving Certificate is not a requirement for mature students and appropriate experience can be considered as being equivalent to the Leaving Certificate.

Society and its many processes can be studied as a whole or in focus. Social studies adopts the wide, macro investigation while applied psychology concentrates on the in-depth, micro relationship between society and the individual. This QQI level 5 course introduces the student to both investigative perspectives.

This QQI level 5 course introduces the student to both investigative perspectives.

Learners will be provided with the theoretical tools to study society and its range of effects. They will develop the competencies and skills to recognise the many processes at work in general and in relation to their own social experience. The range of modules will cover the variety of social variables that dynamically exist and function to provide the framework of modern society.

Society’s many benefits and pressures will be analysed with particular emphasis on the developmental stage of youth. The learner, in this research stage, will explore the areas of mental health and substance use with a view to identifying the social contexts which contribute to these issues and the range of therapeutic interventions and treatments available.
