This one-year, QQI Level 5 course equips the learner with the vocational skills, knowledge and competence to re –skill/ up-skill and explore all concept and subject areas of the current fashion trade. There is a strong focus throughout the course on applying knowledge and skills practically to produce real results in both textile and garment construction including aspects of sustainable and historical fashion, while understanding fashion design field as an aesthetic, cultural and functional study.

Entry Requirements

Education: NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme. CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway Additional requirements may apply to non-EU/EEA Applicants and may be subject to full international fees (Please refer to Information for International Learners) *Each provider may have additional requirements, not outlined above.

Aptitude: Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.

Previous Experience: Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course, be able to work with responsibility and demonstrate the ability to work on their own initiative.

This one-year, QQI Level 5 course equips the learner with the vocational skills, knowledge and competence to re –skill/ up-skill and explore all concept and subject areas of the current fashion trade. There is a strong focus throughout the course on applying knowledge and skills practically to produce real results in both textile and garment construction including aspects of sustainable and historical fashion, while understanding fashion design field as an aesthetic, cultural and functional study.

Work experience gives our learners an opportunity to enhance their career prospects within the fashion industry to reach their full potential.

A fashion portfolio, which demonstrates through variety of projects engaging in design process as an individual designer, the learner’s ability to deliver creative and original responses is prepared including digital illustration & image manipulating with Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator. This course can lead onto the QQI Level 6 course in Advanced Art at College of FET, Mulgrave Street Campus.

On successful completion of this course learners will be awarded a 120 credit QQI level 5 Major Award in Fashion Design.

Learning Outcomes
• On completion of this programme learners will develop proficient technical skills and competencies to enable them to select and employ a range of methods and media to develop and communicate creative solution to design problems.
•Demonstrate a broad knowledge and some specialised analysis of historical and contemporary practice in a design field;
• Demonstrate an understanding of design principles as applied to a design context including form, function, aesthetics, culture and society;
• Demonstrate conceptual thinking and critical analysis in the generation of an individual creative response to a client or self-initiated brief;
• Select and employ a varied range of methods and media to generate, develop and communicate creative solutions to design problems;
• Apply a design process to a particular design field, through a variety of projects ranging in scope from elementary to complex;
• Engage in a design process, subject to some supervision, as an individual designer in response to a client or self-initiated brief and or as a member of a design team;
• Take responsibility for own learning in a structured context;
• Evaluate their own performance in response to a brief with reference to specific objective design criteria;
• To provide a programme of learning that is vocational in nature and flexible in structure so that the learner has the maximum opportunity to improve his/her academic and vocational literacy, numerical, ICT and planning skills while participating in the programme;
• To afford the learner opportunities to enhance his/her confidence and ability to develop the skills to reach his/her full potential;
