It also explores the potential for natural resources by drilling into geological features. In addition, geo drilling facilitates the sustainable development of natural resources, in the areas of geothermal energy and ground water extraction.

The Geo Drilling Apprenticeship programme is a two-year programme combining work experience with academic study. Trainees will work with employers for 41 weeks and attend classes 4 days a week for 11 weeks.

Entry Requirements

For whom is the apprenticeship suitable?
The apprenticeship is for recent school leavers and mature learners, aged 16 or older. Applicants under the age of 23 must have;
• A pass in the Leaving Certificate; 5 grades at O6/H7 including English or Irish and Mathematics.

Applicants over the age of 23 years are classed as mature learners. There are no defined entry criteria for mature candidates entering this programme. All programmes are mapped to the SETU Carlow Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy and applicants who wish to apply using this route can request the specific RPL for their programme.

With this two-year apprenticeship, you will become a fully qualified geo driller, with a QQI Level 6 Higher Certificate in Science in Geo Drilling.

You may then choose to work as a geo-driller in mining and quarrying companies, or large and small drilling contractors.

As a geo-driller you will use a drill rig to advance holes for subsurface investigation work. You will work to support critically important sectors of the Irish economy including mining, mineral exploration, quarrying and geothermal energy development.

Geo-drillers work involves extracting samples, installing monitoring equipment, undertaking on site testing, assessing and developing water supplies, allowing for the passage of services under sensitive structures such as roads, railways and canals, facilitating the installation of ground support and preparing holes for explosive blasting.

By the end of your training, you will be able to:

Understand site practice essentials including - safe use/maintenance of tools and equipment, drilling, testing and sampling, installing and logging

Understanding engineering drawings including plans and sections

Work effectively with hazard avoidance and risk assessment, basic first aid, fire extinguishers, pattern development, manual and mechanical handling, environmental protection of sub-surface and groundwater resources

Choosing the appropriate equipment to bring to site for the anticipated ground conditions and project requirements

Accurately set out drilling locations and recording same

Make and repair drilling equipment, water pumps, drill rigs etc.

Fitting and assembling the necessary parts

Accurately documenting and communicating sub-surface variations to designers

Understand pricing and accurately recording quantities.
