Entry Requirements

While there will not be a specific qualification requirement, there is an expectation that candidates will have obtained a minimum of junior cert level (NFQ-QQI level 3) and experience in related industrial sectors would be beneficial for the student. Applicants will be assessed individually on a case-by-case basis.

Relevant industrial experience or training may be considered via the University’s recognition of prior learning (RPL) policy and process.

What is RPL?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is when formal recognition is given for what you already know prior to starting on a programme or module. With recognition of prior learning the focus is on learning and not on experience as such. You can apply for RPL in any MTU accredited programme or module. Programmes which are accredited by professional bodies or any external awarding bodies may have their own procedures for RPL which you should refer to. Go to https://www.mtu.ie/admissions/undergraduate/recognition-of-prior-learning/

Careers / Further progression

Career options
Graduates of this certificate award can find opportunities in areas related to calibration and instrumentation roles within industry.

Progression
Graduates will be eligible to progress to complete a level 7 major award such as the BSc Instrumentation & PLC Systems.

Note that the modules taken on the Certificate in Process Analytical Instrumentation are embedded within the BSc Instrumentation & PLC Systems programme and will be recognised so that students only need to complete the remaining modules on that programme should they wish to achieve the major award.

Overview
This part-time special purpose award (SPA) of 20 ECTS credits is designed to meet the industry skills shortage in the area of Process Analytical Instrumentation.

The SPA is designed to provide the skills required by a learner and thus provides an opportunity for companies to sponsor their employees whilst they upskill. The course is industry focused to address scientific skills gaps within many regulated manufacturing sectors such as Biopharmachem, Food and Beverage, Energy, Water, MedTech, etc.

The Certificate is designed in collaboration with Industry to upskill graduates to become familiar with fundamental concepts around process and analytical instrumentation (nb liquid and gas analysis), calibration & asset management (ISO17025 calibration), Instrument design and Industrial Quality systems.

Upon successful completion of the Certificate, graduates will have a fundamental knowledge and qualifications at level 7 (QQI) in the area of Process Analytical Instrumentation.

This 20-credit special purpose award comprises of four modules delivered over two semesters in a single academic year.

Modules are delivered in the evening time in a blended mode using MTU's learning management system (CANVAS) as follows:

Semester 1:
PHYS7036 Analytical Instrumentation [Tuesday]
PHYS7037 Calibration & Asset Management [Wednesday]

Semester 2:
PHYS7021 Process Quality Systems [Monday]
