The aim of this programme is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skill and understanding of the diverse elements within the sports industry with particular focus on injury management. Students will be equipped with a variety of practical skills as well as a solid foundation in exercise science. This award affords students the dual opportunity to either seek employment or progress their studies at 3rd Level colleges in the area of Sport, Leisure and or Exercise Science. Practical elements of this course take place in The Movement gym, Castlebar. Successful students will receive a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Sports, Recreation & Exercise.

This is a one-year full time course and runs from September to May.

Entry Requirements

A Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent is required, although exceptions are given to mature students who are over 23 years of age. Entry is subject to interview.

Careers / Further progression

Progression/Career Opportunities:
On successful completion of this course students may either choose to seek employment in the Sports and Leisure industry such as Health and Fitness Instructing. Graduates can progress to further training in a career related area e.g. Personal Training.

Progression to 3rd Level Institutes of Technology and Universities for degree programmes is a popular option. Successful progression is subject to achieving the entry requirements for QQI graduates for the particular course in question.

Further information

To accept your place, students will be asked to pay exam fees of €50 for QQI Level 5 or €80 for QQI Level 6 Examinations.

Medical Card holders are exempt from paying both of those fees, but must produce a valid medical card to accept their place.

Those in receipt of a Student Grant, a Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) or a Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS) allowance may also be exempt, but must provide evidence of same. A student services fee of €100 is also payable by all students to accept your place.
