Entry Criteria
Entry criteria / prerequisites Level 4 Certificate / Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) or relevant life experience detailed in a current Curriculum Vitae. Please provide details and attach a copy of either a current CV or Certificate. Learners must be a resident of Ireland / based in Ireland.

English
As this NFQ level 5 qualification is delivered through English it is necessary learners will have sufficient written English skills to complete this course. Forus Training recommends a minimum English language competency of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) for successful completion of this programme. If you are not sure what level of English competency you have, please contact hello@forustraining.ie and a Course Advisor will arrange for you to take an assessment.

IT Skills and Equipment Required
Basic working knowledge of computers and access to a computer with internet access is required to do the course. A PC with Windows 8 or later or a Mac with OSX 10.5 or later.

An internet connection with a speed of at least 10mbps.

The latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari, set to accept cookies and pop-ups.

Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader, to view content.

Word processing software, such as MS Word or Google Docs.

Some courses include video, therefore your computer must be capable of playing video and sound.

What are my progression routes?
This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this programme may use their credits towards completing a higher level of study in the area of Hospitality and Tourism.

Students who successfully complete this Major Award can also use the Certificate as the basis for entry into selected courses in Third Level Colleges and Universities.

In this classroom-based module, you will learn the structures, profile and role of Irish tourism. Identify key provisions of legislation and regulation relevant to accommodation operations.

Throughout this programme, you will discover how to;
Summarise the structures, profile and role of the Irish tourism and hospitality industry including grading systems and related customer expectations

Describe the role, structure and organisation of the accommodation department, demonstrating an understanding of accommodation service terminology

Identify the full range of accommodation services, including the accommodation assistant's role, responsibilities and key tasks

Explain the key provisions of legislation and regulation relevant to accommodation operations, including the roles of national agencies and the principles of procedures for hygiene, health, safety ,fire prevention and security

Describe the systems for heating, lighting and ventilation in the context of hospitality operations

Explain the principles of communications, customer care, sales and quality service

Describe the role of exterior and interior design in creating a distinctive and hospitable image and enhancing operational efficiency

Explain the different types of dirt and the applications and precautions associated with wet and dry cleaning agents and chemicals including detergent, bleaches, abrasives, disinfectant, polishes and solvents

Explain the functions and benefits of a computerised property management system including completing routine tasks related to accommodation operations

Stock an accommodation assistant's trolley, selecting the correct cleaning agents, equipment and protective clothing required to complete a range of tasks

Clean surfaces, furniture, fixtures, fittings, materials, upholstery and floors

Follow appropriate sequences and procedures for preparing, servicing and cleaning vacant and occupied public areas, bedrooms, ensuite, leisure facilities, conference and function rooms

Follow appropriate procedures to rectify and report maintenance needs, lost property, damage and theft

Use appropriate procedures for handling, using, maintaining, storing and disposing of cleaning agents, equipment and hazardous materials safely, effectively, economically and in compliance with hygiene, safety and environmental legislation requirements

Use a range of environmentally friendly cleaning techniques

Demonstrate the procedures for recording, checking, sorting, laundering, ironing, storing, maintaining and returning hotel and guest linen

Prepare a continental breakfast for room service including laying-up, serving and collecting trays for room service and apply billing procedures

Communicate with customers including responding to enquiries, complaints and requests and promoting the hotel's facilities and services as appropriate

Assemble fruit baskets and simple flower arrangements
Communicate with other hotel departments

Devise a checklist to assist with the servicing and cleaning of each area to the hotel's standards

Demonstrate appropriate personal presentation, professional attitude, teamwork and friendly, customer-focused approach

Demonstrate hygiene, health and safety practices incompliance with current legislation and regulation

Demonstrate respect for diversity in lifestyles, religion, ability and culture among fellow workers and customers

Implement a range of water, waste and energy conservation measures as appropriate

Skills Demonstration
A skills demonstration is used to assess a wide range of practical based learning outcomes including practical skills and knowledge. A skills demonstration will require the learner to complete a task or series of tasks that demonstrate a range of skills.

Examination - Theory
An examination provides a means of assessing a learner's ability to recall and apply knowledge, skills and understanding within a set period of time and under clearly specified conditions. A theory-based examination assesses the ability to recall, apply and understand specific theory and knowledge

What qualification will I receive?
You will be awarded a certificate 5N1851 Accommodation Techniques. QQI is the awarding body. The certificate you will receive on successful completion is a formal confirmation by QQI that you have demonstrated the knowledge, skill and competence required to achieve the named award.
