Is this course for you?
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with theknowledge, skill and competence to provide holistic care for older people in a variety of care settings working under thedirection and supervision of nursing and or midwifery staff.

Entry Criteria
Entry criteria / prerequisites Level 4 or relevant life experience detailed in a current Curriculum Vitae. Please provide details and attach a copy of either a current CV or Certificate. Learners must be a resident of Ireland / based in Ireland.

English
As this NFQ level 6 qualification is delivered through English it is necessary learners will have sufficient written English skills to complete this course. Forus Training recommends a minimum English language competency of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) for successful completion of this programme. If you are not sure what level of English competency you have, please contact hello@forustraining.ie and a Course Advisor will arrange for you to take an assessment.

IT Skills and Equipment Required
Basic working knowledge of computers and access to a computer with internet access is required to do the course. A PC with Windows 8 or later or a Mac with OSX 10.5 or later.

Careers / Further progression

What are my progression routes?
This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this programme may use their credits towards completing a higher level of study in the area of Health and Social Care.

Students who successfully complete this Major Award can also use the Certificate as the basis for entry into selected courses in Third Level Colleges and Universities.

This course will facilitate the learner to gain knowledge and competency in the delivery of holistic care to clients/patients and understand the importance of promoting quality of life for client/patient. Gain the theoretical knowledge and practical skills in performing clinical procedures and patient care procedures in a competent, safe and hygienic manner.

Through this programme you will discover how to:
Discuss a range of work practices in the provision of individualised holistic care for clients to include knowledge of the factors influencing the activities of living

Analyse the activities of living to include the five main concepts of the model of living and the role of a healthcare assistant in utilising the activities of living

Summarise the principles of maintaining a safe and hygienic environment to include knowledge of infection, accident , fire and problems with sensory deprivation

Implement a range of tasks carried out when caring for a patient in a safe environment to include effective communication skills

Employ the skills of a healthcare assistant in providing care for patients to include an awareness of the importance of nutrition, elimination, fluid balance, weight reporting and correct technique for catheter bag use

Practise skills involved in pressure area care, personal hygiene, foot care, patient temperature, mobilization and urinalysis

Demonstrate competence in a range of care techniques to include observations, manual and electronic counting, recording and reporting of pulse rate, breathing habit and blood pressure

Work independently and as part of a healthcare team to respond appropriately to the needs of a client in a care setting.

This module will cover the following:
You will be given an overview of work practices covering how to provide individualised holistic care for clients.

You will learn what factors influence the activities of living.

You will be given an analysis of the activities of the living which will include the five main concepts of the Model of Living and the role of a healthcare assistant in utilising the activities of living.

Project
A project is a response to a brief devised by the assessor. A project is usually carried out over an extended period of time. Projects may involve research, require investigation of a topic, issue or problem or may involve process such as a design task, a performance or practical activity or production of an artefact or event.

Skills Demonstration
A skills demonstration is used to assess a wide range of practical based learning outcomes including practical skills and knowledge. A skills demonstration will require the learner to complete a task or series of tasks that demonstrate a range of skills.
