Entry Criteria
Entry criteria / prerequisites Level 5 Certificate / Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) or relevant life experience detailed in a current Curriculum Vitae. Please provide details and attach a copy of either a current CV or Certificate. Learners must be a resident of Ireland / based in Ireland.

English
As this NFQ level 6 qualification is delivered through English it is necessary learners will have sufficient written English skills to complete this course. Forus Training recommends a minimum English language competency of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) for successful completion of this programme. If you are not sure what level of English competency you have, please contact hello@forustraining.ie and a Course Advisor will arrange for you to take an assessment.

IT Skills and Equipment Required
Basic working knowledge of computers and access to a computer with internet access is required to do the course. A PC with Windows 8 or later or a Mac with OSX 10.5 or later.

An internet connection with a speed of at least 10mbps.

The latest version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari, set to accept cookies and pop-ups.

Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader, to view content.

Word processing software, such as MS Word or Google Docs.

Some courses include video, therefore your computer must be capable of playing video and sound.

What are my progression routes?
Upon successful completion of this module you will receive a QQI Level 6 minor award 6N1935 Early Childhood Literacy and Numeracy certificate.

This Early Childhood Literacy and Numeracy course leads to a level 6 minor award on the National Framework of Qualifications. On successful completion of this course students may use this level 6 credit (credit value - 15) towards a QQI Advanced Certificate/major award (code: 6M2007).

If you decide to engage in further training and pursue a QQI Level 6 major award, such as the 6M2007 Early Childhood Care and Education award, then this module will count as 15 credits out of the 120 required. This module is one of the 8 minor components which make up the major award. Completion of the major award will equip you with the knowledge, skill and competence to work as an autonomous early childhood care and education practitioner. The Level 6 major award in Early Childhood Care and Education is required to perform the role of Room Leader in an ECCE preschool room. The major award will prepare you to take responsibility for the work of others in leading and coordinating the provision of a quality early childhood care and education environment which promotes children's well-being, development and learning.

The Quality & Qualifications (QQI) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland. Forus Training is registered with QQI to provide courses leading to QQI awards on the National Framework of Qualifications.

Your learning on this useful and engaging course will include theoretical knowledge on language and number acquisition along with concepts and principles regarding teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy. You will develop skills required to enrich the early learning and care environment and support children to develop concept formation and abstract logical reasoning which reflect the Aistear and Síolta frameworks.

Through this programme you will discover how to;
Examine the concepts, theories and principles underpinning the teaching and learning of literacy and numeracy in a specific ECCE setting

Evaluate the main theoretical approaches and models that explain language and number acquisition in a specific ECCE learning context

Devise lesson plans to enrich literacy and numeracy

Guide children to practice their skills in a range of situations and for a range of purposes

Assess a range of resources to support children's language and number acquisition

Assess how the environment promotes development of concept formation and abstract logical reasoning

Organise a variety of observations to evaluate the learning of language and number in an ECCE setting

Appraise own range of specialised skills and those of colleagues in meeting the literacy and numeracy needs of the child in an ECCE setting

Evaluate own learning needs at a personal and professional level and assist others in identifying learning needs

Manage tasks within the parameters of professional conduct including relations with parents, guardians, children and colleagues.

The course 6N1935 Early Childhood Literacy and Numeracy is assessed in the following ways, with the following weighting;

Assignment 40%
Skills Demonstration 60%.

Assignment 40%;
An assignment is an exercise carried out in response to a brief withspecific guidelines as to what should be included. An assignment isusually of short duration and may be carried out over a specified periodof time.

Skills Demonstration 60%;
A skills demonstration is used to assess a wide range of practicalbased learning outcomes including practical skills and knowledge. Askills demonstration will require the learner to complete a task or seriesof tasks that demonstrate a range of skills.

Merit 65% - 70%
Distinction 80% - 100%

What qualification will I receive?
You will be awarded a certificate 6N1935 Early Childhood Literacy and Numeracy QQI is the awarding body.
