Hide-The Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme is an educational opportunities scheme for unemployed persons which is funded by the Department of Education and Science with assistance from the European Social Fund. The Scheme is operated through the Vocational Education Committees and provides a special range of courses designed to meet the education and training needs of unemployed people.
The aims of the scheme are:
- to give unemployed people education and training opportunities which will develop their employability
- to prepare people to go into paid employment or on to further opportunities leading to paid employment

Hide-Education: Leaving Certificate with 5 passes on ordinary level papers at Grade D or better or 4 passes of which at least two are on higher level papers at Grade D or better. Passes must be obtained in English and at least one subject from Mathematics (Ordinary Alternative Course not accepted) or Accountancy. OR Mature persons who have gained suitable approved relevant experience and who are eligible for enrolment as student members of Accounting Technicians Ireland on the basis of their age and experience rather than their educational attainments. Additionally, applicants must have achieved a pass in at least 3 subjects in First Year Accounting Technicians Ireland course, including both Financial Accounting I and Taxation I. Hide-Eligibility criteria are determined by the Department of Education and Skills.
To qualify for VTOS a person must:
- be at least 21 years of age at the commencement of the course,
- be in receipt of an unemployment payment or signing for credits for at least 6 months*.
Also, the course must be provided or approved by the local VEC for the purposes of the VTOS scheme.
A limited number of places are available to persons in receipt of One Parent Family Payment, Disability Allowance, Illness Benefit, Blind Pension, Invalidity Pension, Deserted Wife's Benefit/Allowance, Widow's/Widower's Contributory/Non Contributory Pension and Prisoner's Wife's Allowance and to qualified spouses/partners of persons eligible to participate in VTOS.
Periods spent on VTOS, FS training schemes, Community Employment, Job Initiative, Youthreach or time in prison can count towards the 6 month qualifying period.

- Demonstrate that they have built on the competencies gained in Financial Accounting I from the first year of the Accounting Technicians course and develop a knowledge and understanding of more advanced accounting issues.
- Demonstrate that they have built on the competencies gained in Taxation I module from the first year of the Accounting Technicians course and develop a knowledge and understanding of more advanced taxation issues for individuals, businesses and corporate entities.
- Demonstrate knowledge and have practical experience of effectively using standard software packages used in the business world, particularly those commonly used by accountants. Learners will be enabled to reach a level of proficiency in the use of these packages that will render them effective in the workplace.
- Demonstrate knowledge and technical competency in the area of management accounting to support business functions, activities and decision-making.

Hide-The training course has been designed to provide business with personnel who are skilled in accounting techniques.
The aim of the course is to provide the learners with the skills, knowledge and competence in financial accounting and budgeting; costing and credit control; payroll and tax returns for various types of business and to develop their personal effectiveness and job seeking skills to enable them to either work on their own or obtain employment as accounting technicians.
Accounting Technicians will possess the knowledge, skills and competencies to either work on their own or alongside professional accountants. They will find work in all types of organisations and are widely employed throughout the public sector, industry and in priviate accounting practices.
This course is supplemented with a full range of Information Technology Modules including Database Methods ,Spreadsheet Methods and Word Processing.
An introduction to two modern European Languages, French and Spanish is also part of the Programme.
