All QQI FET/FETAC awards are part of the Common Awards System, or CAS, from 2014. A full QQI FET/FETAC Level 5 or 6 major award will have a minimum credit value of 120. Component awards, or achievement of less than 120 credits, do not constitute a full award.

All QQI FET/FETAC Level 5 and Level 6 awards will be scored using the best 120 credits to deliver a maximum of 390 points regardless of whether they were achieved before or after the introduction of CAS. The scoring process is outlined on the CAO website at CAO.IE.

Hide-IT Sligo welcomes applications from mature students. Up to 20% of places on courses in the Institute are reserved for mature applicants. We recognise the valuable life and work experience that they bring to the courses they undertake.

From your perspective, adding a qualification to your experience can provide a substantial boost to your career. Even a complete career change is an option; the days of people following one career path and staying with one employer throughout their working lives are long gone.

You might now be at a stage when you have a clearer idea of what you want to do than when you first left school. Whatever your current situation and future aims, it’s never too late to benefit from a third level education. The sole criterion for qualification as a mature applicant is age. You are required to be over 23 on 1st January of the calendar year of application.

Applications should be made through the CAO in the usual way. An information evening for interested applicants is held in January each year and a mature student orientation day, which is held just before first year classes begin, is offered to incoming students who have been away from education for some time.

The results of school leaving examinations other than the above mentioned are scored so that applicants can be assessed in the same way as other applicants in the points system. In order to gain entry, applicants must meet 1) the minimum entry requirements, 2) the English language requirement, 3) any specific subject requirements and 4) the points requirements for the course.

Hide-A Student Contribution (registration) fee of €3,000 (2018/19) is payable by all students who do not qualify for a grant or scholarship. SUSI, Student Universal Support Ireland, provides financial support to eligible students. There are two elements to the student grant – a maintenance grant and a fee grant. A maintenance grant is a contribution towards your living costs. A fee grant can cover:

--All or part of your tuition fees.
--All or part of the Student Contribution fee.
--Costs of essential field trips.

Students who qualify for a maintenance grant will usually qualify for a fee grant. If you don’t qualify for a maintenance grant, you may qualify for a partial fee grant if your family’s reckonable income is below certain limits. This grant exempts you from 50% of the Student Contribution, or from 50% of any tuition fees and all of the Student Contribution.

You should avoid submitting an application close to a closing date. No extensions to closing dates will be allowed and all fees are non-refundable.

LATE APPLICATIONS
Late Applications are those which are received after 5:15pm on 1st February 2018 and will be accepted up to 5:15pm on 1st May 2018, subject to the restricitions listed on page 3 of the 2018 CAO Handbook. The online facility for late applications opens on the 5th March 2018 at 12:00 noon - a fee of €60 applies.

Exceptional Late Applications (Exception to the Timetable)
The exceptional closing date of 22nd of July at 5:15pm applies only to applicants who are currently undergraduate students in any year in any one of the participating HEIs (subject to the exclusions listed below). In order to avail of the Exceptional Late Application facility you must have entered the HEI through the CAO system.

If you did not enter your current course through the CAO system, you must first contact the Admissions Office of the HEI to which you wish to apply and they will inform you if you may submit an application direct to the institution.

Exclusions:
You may submit a late application only for entry to courses other than your existing course. If you wish to repeat the year in the same course you must arrange this within your HEI.

Mary Immaculate College Limerick, Trinity College Dublin, University of Limerick, Maynooth University and Galway Mayo Institute of Technology have special procedures in place in the case of current or previous students who wish to apply for entry to another course in the same HEI. Such applicants must contact their Admissions Office to determine the application procedure. However, if you are a student in another HEI and you wish to apply to any of these five HEIs, you should apply through CAO.

Restricted-category Applicants
Mature applicants – most HEIs will require mature applicants, who wish to be assessed on mature grounds, to have applied to CAO by 1st February 2018 at 5:15pm. (This restriction does not apply if the applicant wishes to be considered on the basis of school leaving qualifications only.) Hide-We have developed this course in consultation with arts practitioners in Ireland and abroad. It has the support of nationally- and internationally-acclaimed theatre and film practitioners as well as major locally-based arts organisations including the Blue Raincoat Theatre Company, The Model Arts Centre and The Hawk’s Well Theatre.

In year one, all students study acting, theatre design, voice and movement, cultural studies, digital media, performance analysis and directing.

In year two learners engage in set, costume and lighting design as a foundation for all industry design practices for stage, screen and TV. Learners respond to texts, materials, and characterisation to realise design in 3D form.

Cultural/Performance Studies introduce students to a variety of visual, literacy and critical faculties from a range of cultural and historical backgrounds. Plays, film, productions and live performance are considered from practical and academic contexts.

In year three, students focus on a complete design realisation in 3D scale with costume designs and technical drawings (CAD), in collaboration with a professional director. Cultural/Performance Studies: Students critically engage in theoretical and practical learning across a range of areas including postmodernism, gender theory, post-dramatic performance and post-colonialism.

You are introduced to the theatre and film industries by participating in a 4-6 week work placement of your choice, for example, at the Abbey Theatre, Blue Raincoat Theatre Company Sligo, CBC television (The Tudors) as well as in theatre companies across Europe and the United States.

Key Skills:

You will develop skills in performance design disciplines, including visual research and awareness; text and character analysis; spatial exploration; costume design and model-making; technical drawing and imaging for stage and film. The emphasis is on developing imagination, creativity and visual awareness along with interpretive and collaborative skills. Specific disciplines include film, TV, dance, opera, performance art and music video. You will collaborate with professional directors, prepare a portfolio of work and exhibit in the graduation exhibition.

Cultural Studies: Cultural Studies introduces you to a variety of visual, literacy and critical faculties from a range of cultural and historical backgrounds. The exploration of text to modes of performance is examined, including play texts, film, productions and performance art as well as visual and material culture.

Transferable Skills: You will develop generic and transferable skills such as research, critical thinking, analysis, written and verbal communication. Graduates can work both as creative individuals and as part of a team.

Hide-There is a steady demand for qualified practitioners in the theatre and film industries. Graduates will be qualified to work either as an actor or designer for theatre, film and TV, or alternatively in a range of areas across the performing arts and creative industries in Ireland and abroad.

Theatre Design: You will be employable in a range of careers in theatre design, TV and film design and related professions. Each year a graduate specialising in Theatre Design will receive a bursary from the Institute to take up a six month residency at the Abbey Theatre, called the Yeats Design Residency.

Upon graduating, you can continue to complete a Level 8 in Performing Arts at IT Sligo. Later you may choose to undertake a Higher Diploma in Education, Master of Arts, Master of Education, MPhil in Theatre and Performance, or embark on a PhD.
