Comment Law
At Maynooth Law, we equip students with the core attributes required of the legal graduate, developing students’ problem-solving, advocacy and legal writing skills. We offer critical insights from a range of other disciplines, including politics, psychology, economics and sociology. Students will be exposed to the operation of the law in practice, through engagement with legal firms, public and private sector organisations and community and voluntary groups.
Course Content Criminology, the scientific study of crime, deals with issues that are constantly in the media and attract much public interest. Given the impact of globalising processes on crime and on society more generally in the contemporary era, the Department of Law has identified the need for a programme to deepen engagement with the global across a wide range of criminological and criminal justice issues. The MA in Comparative Criminology and Criminal Justice has been developed to address this need.
Subjects Taught Course Structure
Modules offered include Comparative Criminology and Criminal Justice, Quantitative Analysis, Criminal Responsibility, Prison Law and Policy, and Qualitative Methods. Students also undertake a module on Professional Development and complete a Dissertation. Students can gain work experience through optional placements offered as part of the programme.
Careers or Further Progression Careers
The programme will allow students to build upon their existing qualifications with a view to accessing positions within the justice and security field, with the additional advantage that students will be provided with a genuinely international and comparative outlook. Graduates may go on to work in careers within An Garda Síochána, the security industry, data analytics, probation, the prison service, the civil service, research institutes, academia, and the NGO sector.
