Currently funded under the National Development Plan, Graduate Skills Conversion Programme.
Students who achieve acceptable grades in this programme may proceed to take the MSc in Healthcare Informatics.

Hide-Information management and the utilisation of associated technology is becoming a major activity of the healthcare professional. Our courses are designed to train graduates in medical and allied professions in healthcare informatics.
Course content (30 credits)
Semester 1
This course will comprise a taught course run over 1 week full-time and 4 afternoons, self-directed online learning incorporating the HITS Course from ICS Skills / Healthcare Informatics Society of Ireland and project work.
The semester coursework will comprise six 5-credit modules.
Semester 2
This semester will comprise a taught course run over 1 week full-time and 4 afternoons, self-directed online learning, group and personal project work. Successful students can either be awarded the Graduate Diploma or progress to the MSc in Medicine (Healthcare Informatics).
The semester coursework will comprise three 5-credit modules and one 15-credit “options” module.
MSc (Healthcare Informatics) (30 credits)
This course will comprise 5 hours lectures and a supervised research project, the topic for which will be agreed in advance. It will be examined by dissertation. It will be taken either as three-month full time during the Summer or as 2 semesters part-time.

Semester 1
This will comprise a taught course run over 1 week full-time and 4 afternoons, self-directed online learning incorporating the HITS Course from ICS Skills / Healthcare Informatics Society of Ireland and project work.
Module 1
Introduction to ICT: Use of a personal computer, introduction to Operating System, Applications Software (Use of Word processing and spreadsheet software) (5 credits)
Module 2
Medical information: Use of pub-med, online databases, e-journals. Introduction to networks, networks in healthcare, Presentation software (5 credits)
Module 3
Data, information, knowledge – managing information in healthcare, security, privacy and confidentiality. (5 credits)
Module 4
Systems in Healthcare – Administrative, clinical, human resources management, etc. (5 credits)
Module 5
Medical records – paper and electronic records. (5 credits)
Module 6
Special applications – Radiology (DICOM), Decisions support systems, Expert systems, etc. (5 credits)
Semester 2

Graphics: Introduction to Photoshop, Image manipulation, (5 credits)

Databases, Evidence based medicine (5 credits)
Module 3
Interoperability, standards. Introduction to XML, HL7. (5 credits)
Module 4
Option from eLearning / web development, digital Clinical photography, digital clinical video production, Radiology, Bioinformatics, others (15 credits)
