This is a dedicated executive education programme designed to meet the leadership development needs of Healthcare professionals in the South and South West of Ireland.

Course Practicalities
For the MSc Healthcare Leadership degree, the student will complete six course modules and an applied research project. The course will run on a cyclical basis, every two years.

Lectures take place in a three-day block once per month, on Wednesdays, Thursday and Friday from 09.00 to 17.00. You can anticipate spending up to 3 hours studying outside of lecture time for each hour of lecture.

Students will benefit from induction days, off site lecturing days, coaching and workshops. Specifically module on Team Leadership will offer coaching skills.

Each student will be equipped with a student handbook with details of the supports available to the students.

The programme has been designed in conjunction with healthcare professionals to ensure it meets the skills needs of healthcare industry, in particular hospital groups. Upon completion of the MSc in Healthcare Leadership, you can expect to have excellent career prospects with public hospitals, private hospitals, primary and social care, community healthcare groups, state agencies with a health policy remit and healthcare firms.

Modules
Part I students will take 30 credits over 6 month timeframe (September to March Year 1)

Team Leadership
This module will help students gain personal insight into their own leadership style via the use of appropriate instruments so as to deliver enhanced team leadership skills. This module examines the application of team leadership theory in a modern healthcare environment.

Financial Management
This module includes financial management and investment decision models, including activity based funding and money follows the patient approaches, to enable strategic decision making.

Healthcare Operation and Data Management
This module focuses on Healthcare Quality Improvement by utilising an interdisciplinary approach to creating or adapting existing systems that address the realities of human error in health delivery systems. Also provides an understanding of the governance, risk and ethical considerations of healthcare operations, patient pathways and data governance.

Part II students will take 30 credits over 6 month timeframe (September to March Year 2)

Health Information Systems & e-Health
This module will expose healthcare professionals to the concepts and knowledge involved in making strategic use of information technology (IT) in health care organizations. Issues around the introduction and dispersal of new healthcare technologies across health systems are identified.

Strategic Management in Health Services
This module explores the experience of health services leaders in Ireland and overseas against the received wisdoms from business theory and practice. It will assess the relationship between leadership skills and abilities, and the challenges health service organisations face as they deal with internal and external pressures to address increasing levels of service efficiencies and positive outcome for patients.

Healthcare Economics
In this module partipants will develop an understanding of health economics and how to apply key elements of economic theory to health and health care

Part III students will take 30 credits over 6 month timeframe (April to August Year 2)

Healthcare Leadership
Research Project
Participants will conduct multidisciplinary research, under the supervision of an academic expert mentor on a real life leadership issue in their healthcare setting, to make real improvements and deliver results. Each student will initiate, research and provide a solution to a live leadership case. The output from this project will include a detailed report and presentation.

Hide-To meet the development objectives of the programme the MSc Healthcare Leadership is assessed by a blend of assessments including formal examination and continuous assessment. Five modules are 100% continuous assessment while 1 module contains 50% exam and 50% continuous assessment.

Continuous assessment is in the form of individual assignments, group case study analysis and presentations.

Students will be divided into different groups for each part of the course. This allows you an opportunity to get to know, and work with, all of your colleagues. While we understand some students may have concerns about being assessed in groups, the ability to work with, and lead others, is a skill which is at the heart of the programme. Finally, presenting is one of most important professional skills and so we also incorporate this into the assessment.

The final element of the MSc Healthcare Leadership is an applied research project. Provision may be made if a student experiences a change of work conditions during the course of their study on a case by case basis.
