What is the Master in Education Studies (Visual Arts)? The Master in Education Studies (Visual Arts) is an innovative course designed to enable participants to establish, enhance or critially evaluate imaginative and innovative practices in a variety of arts contexts with increased connoisseurship, confidence and creativity. Graduates of the course will have the ability to critically appraise and reconceptualise approaches and to break out of established patterns in order to look at or explore things in different ways. In addition, they will have the expertise to contribute to local, national or international communities of practice within arts and education.
Who is the course for?
This course is for educators who have a particular interest in visuals arts, integrated arts and arts integration practices and to those who are interested in developing imagination, ideation and innovation at all levels in early childhood education, primary, post-primary, further and higher education.
What will I study?
In year one, students on this course will study 4 discrete modules consisting of a common core module, 2 specialism modules and one elective module selected from a pool of approved modules. In year two, students focus on an area of interest, related to visual arts within Education Studies, in greater depth. They will develop research skills and prepare a dissertation of 20,000 words on a topic relevant to visual arts education.
What are the course aims?
On successful completion of this course participants will be able to:
Critically discuss key issues in educational leadership theory and practice with particular, but not exclusive, reference to visual arts education
Explore the ideas of various thinkers in visual arts education, and critically evaluate them
Pursue study and scholarship in educational studies and visual arts education
Undertake a substantial piece of academic researcher in visual arts education
Identify areas of focus for future professional development as required by the Teaching Council and other bodies, acknowledging that learning is a lifelong process
Develop the skills required to become an effective researcher in education studies, with particular reference to visual arts education
Critically reflect on their experiences in education, as students, teachers or other partners, and document how this reflection informs their practice.
