The BTEI provides part-time Further Education programmes for young people and adults. It aims to give participants an opportunity to combine a return to learning with family, work and other responsibilities. Programmes are offered in partnership with a number of agencies throughout the country on a flexible part-time basis. Classes are offered throughout the year in the morning, afternoons, evenings or weekends. Courses lead to a range of accreditation at levels 1-6 on the NFQ.

The aim of the programme is to enable the learner develop the knowledge, skills and competence to safely operate, under supervision, a milling machine and centre lathe, communicate ideas graphically through technical drawing and use a range of mathematical skills and tools in a variety of engineering sectors.
On successful completion of the programme, learners may progress to further education and training.

Apply a range of mathematical skills and tools to a variety of contexts
Construct a range of geometric shapes, tangents, and plane figures. Draw a range of solid objects and auxiliary projections. Determine true shapes of surfaces, true length of lines and develop surface patterns. Create freehand sketching of components, use a flow chart to demonstrate the stages of production of a component and design a package.
Set up and operate a vertical milling machine to produce simple components with parallel, square and angular surfaces, slots and stepped milling, drilled and reamed holes.
Operate a centre lathe to produce production pieces to specification including parallel and stepped diameters, drilled, reamed or bored holes, knurls, parting off and facing
Explain a range of information technology concepts and terminology; describe the impact of information technology on personal, working and community life; manage files, folders and directories; navigate specific internet sites; create and manage a personal email account and develop skills in data entry and word processing.
Describe the requirements relevant to workplace safety, Identify safety risks & fire awareness.Develop skills in handling workplace items and safety equipment safely and effectively.
set achievable goals for work experience, develop insight into the nature and demands of work, compile relevant material for work experience e.g. CV, letter of application etc utilize learning opportunities presented by work experience, develop employable skills e.g. communication skills, teamwork, co-operation, and reflect on learning to apply to future career plans.
