Hide-Leadership, Planning and Administration in Education Over the last decade or so the role of principals as school leaders has been redefined. The new definition of leadership is informed by research on the connection or link between principals and pupil achievement, a changing policy environment, and increased accountability measures.
The role of school principals has also escalated in recent years to include a wide range of other professional competencies and responsibilities, including financial management, marketing and public relations, and strategic planning. The new definition of leadership emphasises that principals, in addition to performing their executive and managerial functions are also seen as instructional and transformational leaders. This module seeks to ensure that teachers in all sectors of education acquire the knowledge and disposition necessary for them to understand the wide array of core competencies, skills and professional responsibilities associated with effective educational leadership. It also seeks to improve leadership practice for the benefit of all participants.
