•FETAC / QQI Level 5 certificate, Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences.
•Students must currently be working (or on work experience) in the childcare sector for a minimum of 30 hours as assignments will require learners to draw upon practical experience. These placement hours can be completed throughout the 12 week course.
•Garda Vetting is required for all Childcare placements and students can apply for this through The Open College. Please ask for details.
•If you take this programme by distance learning the course material will be posted or emailed to you. You can complete and return assignments/projects which must be typed rather than handwritten either by post or by email.
•As this programme is delivered through distance learning or eLearning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative.
•If you take this course by eLearning you will need basic IT skills and have access to broadband.
•Competent knowledge of English as well as basic typing skills is required as all assessments need to be typed prior to submission for correction.

Hide-The purpose of this new QQI Early Childhood Literacy & Numeracy (Montessori Maths & Language) award is to equip the learner with the necessary skills and competence to ensure that each child develops a competent level of literacy and numeracy skills as developed through the montessori method of teaching.
Each student will gain a full understanding of the montessori method of teaching language and mathematics. Students will be introduced to the montessori materials used in language and mathematics and the presentation of these materials to the child.
Students will learn how the Language and Mathematic exercises can be implemented into everyday life and within the montessori and childcare field and will recognise the importance of the language and mathematics exercises and how to develop extensions of the exercises so that exercises can be individually catered for each child depending on their abilities and developmental stage.

Assignments: The internal assessor will devise two briefs that require the candidates to produce pieces of work of a minimum of 1500 words each.
•Learners are required to critically evaluate the importance of the language exercises in the Montessori classroom.
•Learners are required to critically evaluate the importance of the Mathematics exercises in the Montessori classroom.

Skills Demonstrations: The internal assessor will devise two skills demonstrations that require the candidates to produce pieces of work.
•Devise a themed lesson plan from the language or Mathematics area of Montessori. The lesson plan must include; prerequisites, list of materials, control of error, presentation steps, purposes, language and points of interest.
The learner must devise the lesson plan that is age appropriate to the age of the chosen child/children and encourages self-practice.
•Devise a set of observations to assess the child’s progress relating to the lesson plan as devised by the learner in the previous skills demonstration.
The observations may be in table/checklist format allowing for ease of reporting and follow up by the teacher.
