The programme introduces students to design thinking and idea generation. Through practical studio based projects an understanding of the design process is cemented. Technical skills are taught and combined with innovative ideas to produce exciting and well-executed graphic design solutions. The programme is delivered through a series of lecturers, supervised studio sessions and practical skills training sessions.

Year 1 of the programme consists of 5 modules. Students learn about key influences in graphic design and use this knowledge to influence their own work. Image making and typography are an integral part of the first year and practical training sessions allow students to realise their ideas using industry standard software.

Modules: Image Making, Typography, Idea Generation, Contextual and Cultural Studies 1, Digital Design Technology 1

Year 2

Year 2 of the programme consists of 5 modules. Students learn new skills while building on the core learning from Year 1. Year 2 places more emphasis on the digital environment and allows students to concentrate on a number of subfields such as Web Design, Editorial Design and Photography. By the end of Year 2 students achieve a deeper knowledge and understanding of the core principles of graphic design and are in a position to progress to more self-led, innovative projects.

Year 3

The focus of the Year 3 programme is on professional practice and self-led learning with the completion of a major design project. This year gives students an understanding of what is expected from professional design practice while allowing them focus on an area of personal interest through selecting their own major project subject. On completion of Year 3 students are able to demonstrate initiative and autonomy through a range of original design solutions, and are ready to engage with industry in an independent and knowledgeable manner.

On successful completion of the BA Graphic Design students have a strong portfolio of creative, original design work, which shows their varied skill set and demonstrates ability to communicate visually.
