All applicants must:
• Provide evidence of prior basic knowledge of psychological therapies preferably Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and
• Be currently employed in a clinical or practice setting within an organisation providing therapeutic or counselling services, and
• Be in a role for the duration of the Programme to access a suitable client group for practice and supervision purposes.

Applicants from a non-core profession must provide a portfolio of evidence and references to demonstrate suitable core knowledge, skills and attitudes in line with KSA guidelines produced by The British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

All applicants will be interviewed.

Progression from the PgDip onto the MSc will be subject to successfully completing all PgDip modules and assessment of suitability for study of research methods and advanced CBT practice, which must be approved by the Course Director. Candidates with a relevant PgDip in CBT may apply to undertake the final year MSc modules via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and must provide a record of modular content of prior PgDip in CBT training and relevant CPD. These applicants will be assessed by interview and a DVD recording of current CBT practice. Such candidates will surrender their PGDip certificates if successful in completing the MSc before the new award is issued. This will exempt them from the first year of the MSc in Specialist Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (Trauma) (90 CATS points).

International students will need local placements to access clients for clinical training. Whilst these placements should normally be arranged by the applicants the university will try to negotiate a limited number of placements with local H&SC agencies.

Trainees may study for the Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) over 18 months to obtain the minimum training qualification accredited by The British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) to practice as a CBT therapist or apply to proceed to the MSC which is offered over 2 years.

The MSc adds to the PG Dip modules an applied specialist clinical module for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and related disorders including research methods training designed to facilitate clinical research and encourage therapists to publish in academic journals.

Hide-The MSc is based on the Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and consists of 4 x 30 credit modules which are linked to the BABCP Minimum Training Standards for therapist accreditation (Level 2) and the Specialist Level award for social workers.

The Application of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Models and Skills for Depression and Anxiety module is the supervision module that runs in parallel with the first 2 taught modules CBT for Depression and CBT for Anxiety Disorders.

CBT for other Specific and Complex Orders (Semester 1, Year 2) incorporates both teaching and supervision. Each module is taught one day per week over 3 x 12 week semesters at Queen’s University campus. Students are required to attend small group[MD1] training supervision sessions at Queen’s. Where possible, these will be delivered during the teaching days.These sessions are designed to facilitate the integration of research and theory with practice, and the development of skills in cognitive-behavioural therapy.

The MSc research teaching is provided in year two; semester one comprised of three seminars over two half days (October and December) and one full day (November) in college. In Semester 2 there is one final half day seminar (May) to consider forms of information presentation and dissemination along with plans for writing up the assignment.

The specialist clinical trauma component of the MSc module is an applied specialist clinical module for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and related disorders and is provided in over 12 weeks in the spring semester in year 2. Clinical accountability for CBT clinical practice with trauma clients remains with the agency responsible for the patients. MSc students will also complete further training in research methods.
