The Post Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Respiratory Care in Nursing Practice) is a 1 year part time programme. Postgraduate Diploma students are at a unique advantage in the RCSI where small group numbers and dedicated tutors assist the student journey from start to graduation.

The programme aims to provide students with an advanced level of theoretical knowledge deemed relevant to enhancing practice. The programme is designed to expand the students questioning approach to knowledge development and professional issues pertinent to leading respiratory patient care. Students will develop an in-depth knowledge of the respiratory systems and associated conditions which will in turn enhance their clinical practice.

Learning Outcomes/Aims:
On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:

Critically appraise the management and care of adult respiratory conditions in the context of population health

Critically evaluate respiratory anatomy, physiology, ventilation, lung function, blood flow and metabolism and the relationship between ventilation and perfusion.

Critically explore theories that inform care with reference to biological and behavioural sciences.

Critically evaluate alternate approaches to planning and implementing health education and promotion interventions, policies and strategies to promote respiratory health, care and management.

Critically discuss current understandings of immunology with specific reference to the respiratory system.

Critically discuss the concepts of health and wellbeing in the context of respiratory health, care and management
