This Professional Certificate is unique in that it addresses the needs of health and social care disciplines in understanding and delivering acute mental health interventions. Its interdisciplinary character affords students the opportunity to interact with other healthcare professionals in a dynamic educational setting.

Any professional who comes into contact with people experiencing acute mental illness; for example, nurses, doctors, social workers, occupational therapists and Gardaí may apply for this Certificate.

What is the programme about?

Acute mental health interventions are explored within the context of key medical, social and behavioural treatment models. Best evidence in these areas is used to illustrate the curative and transformative nature of acute mental health interventions within a recovery based framework. Students explore national and international health policy and contemporary best evidence relating to the effective management of acute mental health difficulties. Teamwork in acute mental healthcare is critically examined within the context of diminishing resources, ill-defined professional roles and public expectations. Practical classroom work will revolve around interactional methods used when one encounters someone experiencing an acute mental illness. Feedback from peers adds a real life dimension to the module.

The programme aims to provide you with a strong theoretical foundation for the acute mental health interventions employed in contemporary practice.

What will I learn?

Students will:

1. Demonstrate advanced theoretical knowledge of the main forms of acute mental health intervention and their practical application and of the legislative and policy frameworks pertaining to acute mental healthcare.

2. Verbally and through written media, describe, explain and discuss what acute mental health interventions entail, how they are assessed and how they are best utilised within different settings.

3. This Professional Certificate will enable the student to apply new found knowledge and skills in their workplace. This Certificate will also provide the student with new knowledge upon which they can base future research.

How will I benefit?

This programme is primarily directed towards, but not exclusive to, professionals currently working in health and social care. A key focus of this programme is on fostering transferable skills and participants are facilitated to apply knowledge and skills developed to their particular work area. Due primarily to the teaching methods employed throughout the Certificate, students develop skills in the area of autonomous learning.
