Three years without placement or four years including a placement year. This is a full-time course where you will normally complete three Accounting modules and three Human Resource Management modules per year, with class contact time approximately three hours per week per module. You will be expected to undertake independent study to supplement that contact of around 10 hours per week per module. You will have 9-10 class contact hours per week on the Magee campus.

Studying business at the Magee campus provides students with extensive choice. In this case Accounting may be taken as an equal main subject with Human Resource Management as the other equal main subject.
The flexible structure of this programme affords students the opportunity of choosing a pathway to suit their own personal interests and career aspirations. Graduates will have generic skills in particular management functions and specific skills in accounting and human resource management. The Accounting/HRM main/main combination is particularly suited for graduates wishing to develop a career in Business where these named disciplines are desireable.
The programme equips graduates for a management career in industry, commerce or the public sector. It also provides the entrepreneurial and innovation skills necessary for the creation of new business ventures and to stimulate the competitive impetus for managing and developing existing businesses. The Accounting/HRM main/main subjects help develop supporting expertise of particular interest to the student.
About
The BSc Hons Accounting and Human Resource Management meets the needs of those wishing to pursue a career in business with an interest in Accounting and HRM as specialist areas. The programme allows students to combine two of the principle subject areas from the business arena and to develop the skills and expertise necessary for an aspiring professional career in Accounting or Human Resource Management. In addition, it provides the basis for graduates wishing to take a postgraduate programme up to doctoral level.
The programme seeks to provide the key business knowledge and skills essential for a graduate, seeking a managerial career in general business or a specialist interest in Accounting and/or HRM.
The development of relevant employability skills is at the core of the BSc Hons Accounting and Human Resource Management degree and a variety of opportunities exist within the programme and its modules, to develop such skills. These skills include, for example, Creative Thinking, Project Management, Strategic Planning, Business start-up, Problem Solving and Interpersonal skills as well as specific Accounting and HRM skills.

The BSc (Hons) Accounting and Human Resource Management programme has three Accounting and three Human Resource Management modules in each academic year. Between first and second year students will have sampled the main disciplines of Accounting, Economics, Human Resource Management and Marketing.
Year 1 contains six compulsory modules of study, including an extended induction and study skills module where you are introduced to university teaching and learning methods. This module helps you to prepare for the acquisition of the personal and interpersonal skills needed to enhance career opportunity. The first year modules provide a broad knowledge of business subjects as a sound basis for further study. The modules studied in first year are: Information and Study Skills Management, Introduction to Economics, Principles of HRM, Principles of Marketing, Principles of Accounting, and Organisation and Management Studies.
In the second year students follow the Accounting modules of Management Accounting 1, Financial Accounting 2 and Project Management. The HRM modules are Business and Market Research, Employee Development and Organisational Behaviour.
The third year may be spent undertaking a programme of work experience, usually of 48 weeks duration. Many students undertake their placement in the USA or the Republic of Ireland. Placement provides exposure to alternative business cultures and corresponding protocols. Successful completion of the placement year leads to the award of the Diploma in Professional Practice or a Diploma in International Academic Studies. In the final year students continue with the three Accounting modules of Management Accounting 2, Financial Accounting 2 and Financial Decision Making. The three Human Resource Management modules are Human Resource Strategy, International and Comparative HR and Business Strategy.

Accounting and Human Resource Management graduates are well placed for a management career in the business arena or to take advantage of the increased opportunities in the public sector. Depending on the Accounting and /or HRM choice of business specialism graduates will have generic skills in management functions particularly accounting, marketing and project management and specific specialist skills in accounting and human resource management. Graduates may also proceed to postgraduate study or research in related areas. Throughout the course, students will be encouraged to develop their personal skills and abilities in order to maximize their career potential.
Work placement / study abroad
In Year 3 you will have the option of a paid placement year in a range of local and international locations. This will provide a link between the subjects you have studied and their application in a 'real world' setting. Satisfactory completion of the placement year will lead to the award of Diploma in Professional Practice. You have also the option to study abroad for a year; satisfactory completion of a study abroad year will lead to the award of Diploma in International Academic Studies.
