Hide-Course Description:
The purpose of this module is to provide students with the knowledge, skill and competence to analyse the characteristics, effects and consequences of criminal activities.
In the modern world we are fascinated with Criminology and the process of crime scene investigation. The enduring popularity of TV shows such as the CSI Franchise, Making A Murderer and crime novelists such as John Grisham is testament to this fact. In addition, crime podcasts such as Serial demonstrate the development of the area into modern mediums, including social media, where society as a whole can become the detective, judge and jury.
This course will allow students with an interest in the area of criminal law and crime scene investigation to more fully explore and understand the way in which we think about and, ultimately, administer criminal law. The course is designed to equip the student with general knowledge and transferable skills while focusing on the broad theme of criminal justice.
On successful completion of the course the student will have an understanding of:
The nature of criminal behaviour (including: Does the Punishment Always Fit the Crime?)
The theory of criminal psychology and sociology
Criminal Law including violent crime, burglary and homicide
The Court and Judicial Systems
Forensic Sciences and Crime Scene Investigations (including: Debunking CSI myths)
The module itself will be of interest to those who might wish to further investigate their interest in the law, or use it as a gateway to further study.
A full set of lecture notes and examinable materials will be provided.
