Entry Requirements

For standard applicants, selection is based on points. These are calculated by adding together the points scored in the best six subjects in a single sitting of the Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent). In the courses for which a portfolio is required, additional points to a maximum of 600 are added, based on the outcome of the portfolio assessment.

Maths Requirements
Some courses will accept Foundation Level Mathematics while others require Ordinary Leaving Certificate Mathematics. Please read the entry requirements for each individual course.

Foundation Level Mathematics
For courses that do not specifically require Mathematics as an entry qualification, Foundation Level Mathematics will be accepted. Foundation Level Maths at grade F1 and F2 will count as a passing subject. Points will be awarded for these grades as follows: F1 = 20, F2 = 12.

Implementation of Bonus Points for Higher Level Maths
A bonus of 25 points will be allocated to students who achieve a grade H6 or above in Higher Level (HL) Mathematics. This means that the maximum cumulative LC points total will increase from 600 to 625 (existing maximum points plus bonus points).

Formula

– All students presenting H6 or above in mathematics will have 25 points added to their score for mathematics.

– The six highest subject points scores will then be counted to achieve a cumulative points score, as is normal practice.

The bonus points will only be relevant in cases where the subject HL Mathematics (including bonus points) is scored as one of the candidate’s six best subjects for points purposes. Consequently, if HL Mathematics (cumulative points score) is not among these six subjects, the bonus points will not be included in the total points score.

Irish Language requirements
Foundation Level Irish, at F2 or better, will meet the minimum language requirement for entry to all courses, but currently no points are added.

Applications from FETAC award holders are made through the CAO, and all relevant closing dates and conditions apply.

If you have any full FETAC Level 5 or FETAC Level 6 award, you are eligible to apply for a place on our Ordinary Degree (Level 7 award) course – DL701.

If you have any full FETAC Level 5 or FETAC Level 6 award, with a minimum of 3 distinctions, you are eligible to apply for a place on any of our Honours Degree (Level 8 award) courses.

Please note that some courses (Applied Psychology, Creative Computing, Creative Media Technologies and Creative Music Production) require at least a pass (O6/H7) in Mathematics in the Leaving Certificate or a pass in a Mathematical Methods module as part of your FETAC award.

Points are awarded on the basis of FETAC results.

We welcome applications from mature students to all courses. Mature applicants – i.e. those who are 23 years of age or over on the 1st of January in the year of entry to an IADT course – are not required to meet the minimum entry requirements specified for standard applicants.

Mature and non–standard applicants must also apply to the CAO by the above closing dates and tick the relevant box (mature student or disability/ specific learning difficulty) on the CAO application.

CAO Applicants who have ticked the ‘Disability/SLD’ Box on the CAO application form will receive the ‘Supplementary Information Form’ from the CAO. This must be completed and returned to the CAO by the specified deadline. Such students may be invited to an informal interview to discuss their application and any additional provisions that may be necessary to ensure their full participation on our courses.

If applying for a course in the Department of Film + Media and/or the Department of Design + Visual Arts, mature and non–standard applicants must submit a portfolio for assessment as above. The 1st of February application deadline applies to such applications.

In certain circumstances application may be made for admission to undergraduate courses at post–Year 1 level. Availability of places differs from year to year. Sometimes, in certain courses, no places become available. Application for advanced entry (to Year 2, 3 or 4) of our undergraduate courses must be made via cao.ie. There is no direct application to IADT for advanced entry places.

GCSE / GCE Requirements
Applicants are scored on the basis of a maximum of 4 different subject results at A and/or AS level. For scoring purposes, a combination of a smaller number of “A Levels” and “AS Levels” will be permitted as follows:

1. The best 4 A level results in a single sitting.

2. The best 3 A level results in a single sitting, plus the best AS level result from the previous or the same sitting.

3. The best 2 A level subject results in a single sitting, plus the best 2 results at AS level from the previous or the same sitting.

4. The best 1 A level subject result in a single sitting, plus the best 3 results at AS level from the previous or the same sitting.

An annual Student Contribution (€3,000 in the academic year 2016/17) is payable by all full-time students. This fee, subject to change from year to year, includes an Examination Fee and is payable for each year of study. All students are required to pay the Student Contribution on Registration. Students who receive a grant will have this charge refunded. Those in receipt of Back to Education Allowances may qualify for an exemption from the student contribution. An application under the Higher Education Grant Scheme to cover the cost of the Student Contribution must be submitted to Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) through www.susi.ie or www.studentfinance.ie . For families with more than one student attending Higher Education, please note that you will be required to pay each Student Contribution in full, and then claim the reduction on the second and subsequent contributions through tax reliefs. Tuition Fees
Currently, EU nationals (subject to residency requirements) attending full-time Ordinary Degree and Honours Degree courses are not normally required to pay tuition fees. However, non-EU nationals must do so. Details are available from our Office of Academic and Student Affairs. If you are an EU national and have already attended a third level institution, you should be aware that this may affect your entitlement to free tuition fees and maintenance grants. The general principle, with some exceptions, is that you will only receive financial support once for a given stage/year of study. Ideally, your portfolio should:

Be organised.
Decide how best to arrange your work. For example, it may be chronological or in thematic sections where the initial work is placed next to final pieces.

Show large or 3D work.
We are always pleased to see such work, but please present it as photographs or other documentation.

Be clear.
If you are including team work, tell us what your role was.

Include a CV.
Be sure to include a copy for each course you are applying to. Note details of hobbies, technical skills and involvement in activities relevant to that course.

Be selective.
Include and highlight your best work. We appreciate quality not quantity. Do not include more than 30 pieces. Show work relevant to the course.

Include notebooks, sketchbooks, journals or visual diaries. We want to see how you document your working process.

Art

Your portfolio will normally include:

– Experimentation and exploration.
Our students work across many different areas and media so show us a variety of work, different media and approaches.

– A variety of observational drawings.
For example, life drawing and drawings of spaces, places, objects and people.

– A selection of your best project work.
Projects include visual research work, development work and final outcomes.

– 3D work as photographs.
Include photography of sculptural, spatial or experimental 3D work.

– Digital work.
This could be 2D or 3D work in any software.

– Notebooks and sketchbooks.
Use your sketchbooks and visual journals to show us a real enthusiasm for your subject. Evidence of your creative process and ideas is very important!

Alternative to the Portfolio Assessment
You may choose to attend one of our Practical Project Days. This can be taken instead OR as well as presenting a portfolio. The project will take the form of a three-hour practical workshop and introductory talk. You will be sent further details on this option following your application to the CAO.

How do I apply to IADT?
All applications for admission to the first year of our undergraduate courses must be made directly to the CAO by the 1st February. Please visit cao.ie for application guidelines. Courses in the IADT Departments of Design + Visual Arts and Film + Media also require that you submit a portfolio of your work for assessment. These courses are referred to by the CAO as “Restricted”. You can use the CAO Change of Mind facility (by the 1st July annually), but you can only either remove a restricted course or change the order of preference in your application. You cannot apply to, or add, a new restricted course after the 1st February.

No late applications can be accepted – no exceptions!

When do I submit my portfolio?
We will contact you via the email address that you supplied to the CAO towards the end of February to inform you of your portfolio assessment date, which will be mid –March. You deliver your portfolio to us on the morning of the specified date, complete with the labels, etc. that have been emailed to you.

Please note: if you cannot bring your portfolio in person, it is your responsibility to ensure that it is delivered to us and collected from us.

When can I collect my portfolio?
You will collect your portfolio in the afternoon of the same day you bring it in for assessment. Feedback will be given to you when you collect your portfolio.

When will I know the outcome of my portfolio assessment?
By the end of March, you will be notified by email by our Admissions Office of the points you have been awarded in your portfolio assessment. Points allocated for the portfolio are combined with the points from your Leaving Certificate (or equivalent).

How are portfolios scored?
Portfolios are scored out of 600 points; the pass mark is 240 points (40%). If you get less than 240 points, you will not be considered eligible for the course.

How do I calculate my total points score?
i. Take your portfolio score – e.g., 360 points.

ii. Take your Leaving Certificate points, mature student score, or FETAC/QQI points – e.g., 400 points.

iii. Add 1 to 2 – e.g., 360 + 400= 760 points.
This is your total points score with which you compete for a place in the course.

What happens if I apply for multiple courses in IADT?
If you apply for more than one course, your portfolio will be separately assessed for each course. Bear this in mind when preparing your portfolio; it is not unusual for an applicant to receive a favourable response in one course and not in another.

What if I have prepared a ‘special project’ portfolio for other colleges – do I have to prepare a second portfolio for IADT? Some institutions now limit you to the completion of a “special project” as the only content for your portfolio. At IADT we do not ask for a “special project” because we recognize that every applicant is different, and as such the portfolio should show your individual abilities, interests, and readiness to join one of our innovative courses. If you have completed a “special project”, or you are working on one – that’s fine. If you are pleased with it, do include it in your portfolio. But please remember, we want to see the work that clearly shows you are ready for the opportunities offered by our courses.

You should avoid submitting an application close to a closing date. No extensions to closing dates will be allowed and all fees are non-refundable.

Restricted Courses
Applying for a restricted course – you must have applied to CAO by 5:15pm on 1st February 2018 if you wish to apply for a restricted course. The restricted course must be included on your course choices list by that date, or added to your application using the Change of Course Choices facility for a fee of €10 before 1st March at 5:15pm.

Restricted courses normally require additional assessment procedures, e.g. the submission of a portfolio, an oral assessment or interview, or a written assessment – restricted courses are identified in the handbook by the words “(Restricted - see page 3 of the 2018 CAO Hanbook)” on the same line as the restricted course’s title. Please make sure to acquaint yourself with the additional requirements, if any, of the restricted course(s) that you have applied for and go to page 11 of the 2018 CAO Hanbook for more information about interviews and assessments.

Exception: If a restricted course shares the exact same assessment procedures with a course you had applied for by 1st February 2018, you may be permitted to introduce it on a ‘Change of Mind’. You should consult with the relevant HEI before introducing such a course.

Restricted-category Applicants
Mature applicants – most HEIs will require mature applicants, who wish to be assessed on mature grounds, to have applied to CAO by 1st February 2018 at 5:15pm. (This restriction does not apply if the applicant wishes to be considered on the basis of school leaving qualifications only.) Approximately €1000 per year (years 1, 2 and 3) for materials and tools. You will have an opportunity to take part in extended field trips or international visits (not compulsory). Your final year exhibition is your professional showcase. We advise you to budget for not less than €1000.
