How to Apply
Students typically apply for WIT part-time courses online. To apply go to the WIT Part-time website at via www.wit.ie/parttime, click into the Course webpage and then click on the “Apply for this Course” button. [NOTE: Postgraduate applicants will be directed to the www.pac.ie system. Please see the Application information on each course page.]

Option A: Apply and pay the tuition fees by Debit/Credit Card.

Option B: Complete and print the online application form, and post it with your payment (Cheque, Postal order, Bank Draft) within 10 working days.

Your application can not be processed until payment has been received. In certain cases late applications may be accepted (i.e. shortly after the closing date). In these cases the 10 days does not apply and applicants will be required to pay at the time of application.

Please supply a valid email address - all correspondence regarding your application, start date of your course etc. will be made by email. It is your responsibility to check your nominated email inbox regularly.

Apply in Person
Students may also apply in person at the Part-time Student Helpdesk in the main atrium of the WIT Cork Road Campus or at the WIT Part-time Open Evening on Wed 23rd August 2017 5pm – 7pm.

Please note that we can only accept card payment – no cash payments can be accepted. Where employers are paying fees please seek payment or reimbursement from your employer. WIT Part-time can not offer invoicing facilities.

The following supports may be worth considering:
Instalment Plan Facility
If students have difficulty in paying the full fees on application, they may wish to avail of the instalment facility (available to undergraduate students only). When students register, they must agree and accept the terms and conditions. If students fail to meet these terms and conditions WIT reserves the right to withhold certain student facilities and privileges. Please see the Student Information section of the www.wit.ie/parttime website for more information.

Deregistration and Refund of Part-time Fees
Part-time courses go ahead subject to sufficient enrolments and viability. If a course is undersubscribed, we will let students know at the earliest opportunity, make every effort to offer students an alternative course or we will refund students the full tuition fee via bank transfer or directly back to your credit card.

Where a student finds themselves in a position where they no longer wish to or are not in a position to continue on their course they need to de-register from the Institute. Deregistering means that a student officially notifies the Institute that s/he is leaving their programme.

Students remain liable for fees up to the date they officially withdraw from the Institute. In order to de-register from the Institute there is a deregistration form which a student must complete which is available from the Part-time Student Helpdesk.

Refund of Part-time Fees:
• A 100% refund of fees paid will be made if requested in writing before the course begins.
• All courses run subject to sufficient numbers. Where a course does not run students will be entitled to a 100% refund of fees paid.
• Students who have paid fees for 12 weeks or less must request a refund in writing before the end of their first week attending the course in order to be eligible for a refund of fees paid minus an administration charge of 25%. No refunds will be paid thereafter.
• Students who have paid fees for more than 12 weeks must request a refund in writing before the end of their 8th week in order to be eligible for a refund of fees paid minus an administration charge of 25%. No refunds will be paid thereafter.
• Requests for refunds must be made in writing to the Part-time Student Helpdesk at parttime@wit.ie. Refunds may only be made following submission of a completed Refund Form available from the Part-time Student Helpdesk at parttime@wit.ie

Deferral
Deferral means that a student applies to defer or postpone his/her programme or an element of it. Ordinarily students are liable for fees. However, where there are mitigating circumstances fees may be carried over.

Mitigating circumstances include: Serious medical condition or injury; Bereavement of close family members such as parents or siblings or guardians; a traumatic experience which could include but is not limited to: a) personal involvement in or witnessing of a serious accident or crime b) a serious crime committed against the person.

In order to apply for such deferrals a student must complete the relevant application form(s) within the prescribed time period and supply the required evidence. Please see the Student Information section of the www.wit.ie/parttime website for further information.

Applicants whose first language is not English must submit evidence of competency in English, please see WIT’s English Language Requirements for details.

However, some applicants who do not immediately meet these requirements may wish to consider using WIT’s Recognition of Prior Learning mechanism in order to make application that can be considered for entry to this course. For example an applicant who does not have a Leaving certificate qualification but who has informal learning (e.g. learning gained through relevant work experience) can submit an RPL portfolio setting out, in the prescribed format, this previous learning.

Students over 23 years of age may be exempted from this requirement if they can demonstrate that they are suitable candidates for the course of study. Please see more information on Entry Requirements in the Student Information section.

Evidence of Existing Academic Qualifications
All undergraduate and postgraduate applicants are required to provide evidence of their existing academic qualifications in order to demonstrate that they meet the course entry requirements. Undergraduate applicants are required to submit a copy of their leaving certificate results/ transcript of results/ scanned copy of any further or higher education parchments to TLACE@wit.ie along with an up to date copy of their CV for review. Please note this can be a photo or scanned copy of the original document – you do not need to post in certificates.

Please include your name, the online application reference number and course title in the email subject field. Students cannot be registered for WIT awards until their qualifying documents are submitted for review.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is the term used to describe the system for giving formal recognition to a range of relevant learning that you may have gained prior to entry onto a particular course.

RPL can be used by applicants to:
• Gain admission to a course of study by helping candidates to demonstrate that they have met the entry requirements;
• Gain exemption(s) from a module(s) within a programme of study where students can formally demonstrate that they have already met the learning outcomes for the module(s) concerned. In order to make a valid application for an exemption applicants must first pay the full fee applicable for the module. If the RPL application is successful applicants will be refunded 50% of the fee.

Prior learning includes both formal and Non-formal learning. Formal learning is gained through completing courses/ modules in further/ higher education or other certified courses. Non-formal learning may be attained through work, voluntary activities or private study but for which no certification may have been obtained.

It is important to remember that any RPL application must focus on learning attained and not simply, for example, on time spent in a particular job. All RPL decisions must be validated by the Academic Department expert in the relevant area.

We encourage those in receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance, Jobseeker’s Benefit, Jobseekers Transitional Payment or One Parent Family Allowance* to apply as part time students to WIT in order to improve their employment prospects. Applicants in receipt of these payments may apply for a bursary rate (circa 25% discount) for many part-time undergraduate courses. Please see the individual courses pages for more information.

Please provide evidence of your eligibility by supplying your PPS number and signing the declaration which states that the information submitted is accurate and honest. Your details will be verified by the Department of Social Protection. (Please see the reduced fees listed by programme in this prospectus under the heading ‘Cost, if eligible for bursary scheme’. This scheme will be subject to review at the end of the 2017/2018 academic year and does not apply to any of our part-time postgraduate programmes.

*If your partner is claiming one of the above payments on your behalf you may also be eligible to claim the bursary. Proof of joint benefit payment is required.

Tax Relief
People pursuing part-time courses leading to a third-level qualification may be eligible for tax relief on their fees if paying from their own income. Hide-The Certificate in Introduction to Dairy Science course is a 10 credit, Level 6, Special Purpose Award. It is aimed at those intending to or already working in the dairy industry and was developed by WIT (funded by Wales Ireland Network for Scientific Skills (WINSS)) in consultation with major Irish dairy industries. The course will provide students with an understanding of a modern dairy enterprise including factors influencing milk quality and yield. Students will learn the fundamentals of dairy production, processing and quality management. Additionally, the course will provide students with knowledge on the principles and technologies used in dairy processing and the importance of working in an environment which operates under strict guidelines for production and quality outputs.

The course contains a blend of lectures, practical sessions, field trips, group work and independent study. Continuous assessment such as in-class tests, laboratory reports and teamwork problem solving assignments will be used.

Course Structure
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
• Describe the origins of milk, impact of sources on overall quality of end product produced and the issues / challenges facing farmers in milk production.

• Evaluate core milk processing stages including pasteurization process and recognise the role of non-dairy ingredients in dairy manufacturing.

• Evaluate and analyse milk constituents and illustrate an understanding of the range of milk products using milk or a derivative of milk.

• Identify the role and function of quality control, quality assurance, quality auditing and in process testing in dairy processing.

• Describe the significance of GMP as a pre-requisite to HACCP in the food industry, discuss the origins of HACCP and its basis as a Food Safety Management System.

• Examine food and environmental pathogens associated with the dairy industry and the importance of hygiene and cleaning in place.

• Discuss where effluent comes from and what it consists of and how it should be treated / disposed of with both relevant legislation and also company profitability in mind.
