Programme Overview:

The Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (Renal or Urology) is designed to equip students with the theory and skills necessary to provide evidenced based, quality care to patients with renal / urological disorders in todays challenging healthcare environment. Using a blended learning approach, this programme allows students to explore a range of clinical and theoretical issues, whilst also fostering the skills necessary to function as team leaders and clinical resources to peers.

By undertaking a strand specific to their needs, students will develop as knowledgeable, skilled and reflective practitioners. Students undertaking the Renal Strand complete the core modules of Understanding & Managing Renal Disorders, Understanding & Managing Renal Replacement Therapies, and Understanding & Managing Renal Transplant. Students undertaking the Urology Strand complete the core modules Understanding & Managing Renal Disorders, Understanding & Managing Renal Transplant and Understanding & Managing Urological Disorders.

Learning Outcomes/Aims:

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:

Critically explore the aetiology and pathophysiology of renal disorders and their physiological effects on other body systems.

Critically evaluate the holistic assessment of the patient presenting with a diagnosis of renal disease.

Demonstrate critical awareness of the holistic nursing care and management of the renal patient receiving renal replacement therapies

Critically explore the complications associated with renal replacement therapies including their management and prevention.

Critically appraise the effects and side-effects of immunosuppressive therapy and their relationship to the long term management of the renal transplant recipient.

Critically evaluate the effectiveness of the multidisciplinary team in the provision of a support network to the urological patient and their families

This programme is delivered in partnership with Beaumont Hospital. The first three modules are delivered in the RCSI with the remaining 3 modules and clinical component delivered in Beaumont Hospital. The programme is offered part-time with an entry point each September. Students may be interviewed for positions on this programme.
