Programme Overview:
The Post Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Gerontological Nursing) is a year-long course run in conjunction with Beaumont Hospital. This course offers the student both the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills necessary to provide evidence based, quality care to our older population, whether in the acute setting, residential care or rehabilitation. The programme uses a blended learning approach including lectures (provided on site in Beaumont hospital), reflective practice, on line learning and clinical placement.
Students will gain valuable clinical exposure to rehabilitation of the older person (St. Josephs Rehab, Raheny), the acute care setting (Whitworth ward, Beaumont Hospital) and residential care (Raheny Community Nursing Unit, Raheny). Assessment is carried out by means of assignments, exam and a competency document assessing your practical application of theoretical knowledge in the clinical setting.
Learning Outcomes/Aims:
On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:
Critically discuss the older person and living with chronic illness and disability.
Critically discuss the importance of the social approach to care in the extended care setting.
Critically evaluate emerging health and social policy in relation to older adults from a national and international perspective.
Critically evaluate the available demographic information on older adults and its influence on policy formation.
Critically discuss person-centred care for older persons in the acute care setting based on knowledge that reflects the unique characteristic, needs and responses for older people.
Critically discuss and demonstrate an understanding of multiple co-morbidities and the older adult.
