Hide-Overview
Italian is a world language, a means of access to a rich cultural tradition and to a dynamic, modern industrialised economy. The course will therefore provide the opportunity to learn the foundations of good, modern Italian for practical use, involving intensive study of basic Italian grammar, commonly used vocabulary and idiomatic language. In language classes, students are encouraged to develop both written and spoken skills. Students will also be introduced to key notions in post-Unification Italian culture and to the critical study of texts, images and film: this module is complementary to the language module, providing an understanding of Italian culture and society, developing students critical and analytical skills and introducing them to carefully selected authentic texts in order to reinforce language acquisition.

Hide-This Certificate course will provide a broad foundation for the discipline of Italian through an introductory module on Italian language (15 credits) and a text-based course (5 credits) designed to provide an understanding of modern Italian culture and to develop critical and analytical skills:
Year 1 Modules:
◾IT1150: Italian Language (Beginner Level) (15 credits)
Intensive study of basic Italian grammar, commonly used vocabulary and idiomatic language, in small group tutorial classes.
◾IT1250: Post-Unification Italian Culture and Society (5 credits)
Study of a variety of texts, images and recordings within the framework of post-Unification Italian history.
|
| Assessment Method |
Assessment of the language module is by Continuous Assessment including two one-hour in-class tests, and oral/aural assessment. Continuous Assessment for the culture module involves two written commentaries, in which students will develop skills to be used subsequently in a more sustained piece of written assessment (essay). The aim in both cases is a progressive assessment of skills as students develop through the course. |
