Hide-This course is aimed anyone who is interested in learning in more detail about the practical aspects of Irish Archaeology. It is intended that participants will gain an insight into how archaeologists work and perhaps more importantly how their work allows them to reconstruct past environments. While the course may be primarily interesting for people who have completed Introduction to Archaeology - Part One, it can also be taken on its own. The first lecture will outline the history of the Archaeological profession, from its origins in the antiquarian and artistic world of the 17th-18th centuries. After this the rest of the course will detail the various methods used in archaeological research using case studies, including the excavation of a crannog, the history of medieval pilgrimage routes in England, Spain and the Middle East and how finds like decorated floor tiles and stained glass can help us to reconstruct a medieval abbey.
