The MSc in Quality & Safety in Healthcare has been developed to masters level to respond to an increasing demand for continuing professional education and development for healthcare professionals working in today’s complex health system.

This programme aims to:

•Provide students with a sound knowledge base appropriate to MSc level.

•Develop students’ ability to challenge assumptions and to question values, beliefs and policies underpinning health and healthcare, at individual and organisational levels.

•Develop students as reflective practitioners with the skills, confidence and awareness necessary to identify and implement evidence based quality and safety in healthcare.

•Develop the ability to use quality improvement tools and interventions that are specific to quality and safety in healthcare.

•Provide students with the skills necessary to develop and critique appropriate research and evaluation methodologies.

•Develop students’ ability to integrate skills and knowledge gained throughout the programme.

Hide-The MSc in Quality and Safety in Healthcare Management programme is designed to facilitate staff working in the health service. The MSc is a part-time programme delivered using a combination of classroom contact days supported by online learning and tutorials. The Postgraduate Diploma requires completion of six learning modules each requiring three contact days.

The MSc Degree requires the completion of a dissertation in addition to the six learning modules undertaken in the Postgraduate Diploma and requires six contact days. Most participants complete the Postgraduate Diploma in just over one academic year and the MSc Degree in two academic years.

Given the time constraints on participants, the programmes are flexible and can be completed over a five-year period.

Semester 1

Module 1: Introduction to Quality & Safety in Healthcare (10 ECTS)
This module provides you with an introduction to the concepts of quality and safety in healthcare within your national healthcare system. The evolution of quality and its pioneers are addressed as are the catalysts and drivers for quality. The dimensions of quality, as viewed by key influential thinkers, are debated and applied to the various areas of practice.

Module 2: Tools & Frameworks for Quality (10 ECTS)
In this module you will examine structure, process and outcome as key areas of safety and quality in healthcare. Total Quality Management and Continuous Quality Improvement are explored. You will apply quality tools and techniques to your everyday work practice.

Module 3: Evaluation, Measurement & Research (10 ECTS)
The focus in this module is on how to gather, analyse, interpret and present data in the cotext of evidence based practice. The competencies gained here will underpin your learning at Msc level.

Semester 2

Module 4: Leadership & Strategic Management (10 ECTS)
Different approaches to leadership and your preferred leadership style are explored here. You learn how to design and implement strategy using a wide variety of tools to understand the external environment and assess the internal strengths and weaknesses of your organisation.

Module 5: Accreditation & Standards (10 ECTS)
Here you will discuss the accreditation process as an external audit of quality. Different models of accreditation and standard setting will be examined for appropriateness and applied to your work setting. You will be introduced to debate as a learning strategy in this module.

Module 6: Clinical Governance (10 ECTS)
The focus of this module is on providing you with the knowledge and skills to implement a safe and quality service using a clinical governance approach. Clinical incident reporting, risk management, integrated care pathways, legal issues, the International Standards Organisation and Six Sigma will be addressed. Here you will gain the skills of poster presentation.

Semester 3 & 4

Project/Dissertation & Action Learning Sets
The change management project will give the opportunity to apply key learning outcomes from the previous six modules. The focus of the project is on improving a learning/teaching aspect of your work. The project is assessed on the basis of three components: a project report, a reflective diary and a poster presentation. Action Learning Sets will support participants in the undertaking of their projects and in the writing of their reports.
