Comment Adult and Community Education at Maynooth is at the forefront of development in adult educational practices, research, and innovation in Ireland. The Department has influenced policy development on equality of access to education, professionalisation of the sector, lifelong learning, and recognition of prior learning. The Department is recognised as a leader in outreach programmes for third level education.
Course Content The Masters provides the space and support for critical reflection on the professional experience of adult education in the field, helping students to understand and contribute to the public debate on social justice and critical citizenship and to develop a thorough grounding in the background and influences of research on adult and community education.
Subjects Taught Course Structure
Modules include advanced gender studies, advanced theories in adult and community education, ethical perspectives, power and politics, research methodology and group supervision and reflexive research.
Careers or Further Progression Careers
For professionals working in the adult education sector including further education, this course provides the theoretical frameworks with which to explore and question the assumptions that underpin their workplace experience. It will also enable them to build critical reflection with respect to power relationships (among them gender, class, race, ethnicity and disability), pedagogical approaches and professional practice.
